When you book an RV in Chatham County, you will have access to much of what central North Carolina has to offer, including both its extensive outdoor and interesting indoor attractions alike. Located in Chatham County is Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, which is a great place to enjoy some motorhome camping. The recreation area surrounds Jordan Lake, as the name suggests, and covers over 45,000 acres of public use land. The lake is a source of fresh water to nearby cities, such as Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Sanford.
The recreation area and lake that it surrounds was the product of a massive undertaking by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after a disastrous hurricane struck the area in 1945. The lake was built after a dam was constructed, and the area surrounding the lake was set aside as a recreation area to ensure the quality of the water remained high. Every year on the first Saturday in October, the lake is home to a festival that celebrates the specific cultural and natural resources in the area, known as Heritage Day.
Renting an RV is a great way to see a new area, and while spending time in Jordan Lake State Recreation Area guests will have ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Hiking is a very popular activity at the park, and with an extensive trail system, it is no surprise that many guests enjoy this activity. There are trails that lead to overlooks, to shady spots by the water, and deep into the quiet of the woods.
Another popular activity at the park is watching Bald Eagles. The lake supports one of the largest concentrations of Bald Eagles in the eastern United States, and there are many efforts continually made to protect this important species. Eagles can be seen all throughout the park, often soaring in the sky over the water while looking for fish that are close to the surface. While camping at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area guests will have a chance to spot the eagles, and the best time to see them is typically in the early morning or late in the day.
While visiting the area in a rental RV, be sure to bring your fishing gear if spending your day on the water catching fish is something you like. This massive lake is a great place to cast a lure, as there are a variety of species that can be caught. The most common fish in the lake include bass, crappie, catfish, and panfish, all of which love the collections of underwater stumps and rocks in the lake. Be sure to get your state fishing licenses in order before your visit, as you wouldn’t want a ticket or fine to ruin your perfect day on the water.
Exploring this region of North Carolina is easy when you camp in an RV near Raleigh since you will have the convenience of staying near the city while still enjoying the great outdoors. The campgrounds at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area are extensive, to say the least, and guests can pick from over hundreds of different RV sites to fit their needs and preferences. There are three different campgrounds within the recreation area, Crosswinds Campground, Parker's Creek, and Poplar Point.
In total, between the three sites, there are over 1,000 camping spots to pick from, depending on availability. The standard amenities can be found at almost all of the locations, which for RVs includes water and electricity. Throughout the different campgrounds, there are different perks to explore, but all of them have access to showers, restrooms, trash containers, picnic tables, grills, and more.
Instead of booking a hotel in Raleigh, guests can rent a camper near Jordan Lake State Recreation Area as an easy alternative to explore the city. Raleigh is the nearest large city to the recreation area, and the amenities, attractions, restaurants, and museums offered in the city are extensive. Guests will be able to find nearly any type of restaurant they prefer, and gas stations can be found dotting the city at nearly every major intersection.
One fun thing to do in Raleigh is visiting the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. This massive museum is home to gigantic exhibits that will keep kids entertained for hours on end. Also in the museum are fossil collections, educational materials on the local flora and fauna, information about the region's geology, and more. For a low-key visit book a film in the 3-D theater or visit one of the live-animal programs.
Aside from the natural science museum, the North Carolina Museum of Art is another great place to visit with the family. This museum, which has a permanent collection that spans over 5,000 years, has many child-friendly exhibits to keep young minds engaged. There are historical artifacts, rotating exhibits, and even an outdoor monument park. There is more to Raleigh than museums, of course, and a walk down any of the main central streets will bring you to diverse restaurants, fun small shops, and local attractions that make this city a special place to visit while camping with an RV nearby.
