Pettigrew State Park is a park located in two different North Carolina counties, Tyrrell County and Washington County. The park is named for J. Johnston Pettigrew, a Confederate general. Pettigrew was born and lived in Tyrrell County. Pettigrew was one of the division leaders responsible for the disastrous Pickett’s Charge. He, unfortunately, succumbed to injuries a few days after Gettysburg when he was attacked and killed. His death impacted North Carolina so deeply that the entire state held a day of mourning.
