Getting Outdoors

Boating and fishing are a great way to spend your time here at Shawnee State Park. Both Roosevelt Lake and Turkey Creek Lake have boat ramps and offer excellent fishing. You can expect to reel in catfish, largemouth bass, and bluegill. Crappie and trout are also common catches. The park also hosts an annual trout derby at Turkey Creek Lake.

Many visitors find a pleasant time at the park's 18-hole public golf course. The course is near the Ohio River and features a pro shop for golfers. The course itself is an open, lush, green area with four ponds throughout it. One hole along the way offers a great view of the riverbanks. If you're into golfing, be sure to check out the course, or maybe even introduce the family to the sport.

Make sure to get your fill of fun at one of the beaches in Shawnee State Park, or even both. One beach can be found along Roosevelt Lake and the other at Turkey Creek Lake. Visitors may go swimming or soak up the sun on the sandy beach. Changing rooms are available to swimmers at each of the beaches.

Wildlife watching is another fan favorite at Shawnee. The park includes a nature center and a wide variety of flora and fauna. Forests here are full of hardwood trees and unique wildflowers. Animals you'll likely find include the white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and raccoon. Keep your eyes open for black bears and bobcats, as these are occasionally seen as well. For birdwatchers, the park is home to various species of songbirds and may lead you to some new sightings, so stay alert.

Camping at Shawnee State Park

Planning to do a little RV camping at Shawnee State Park? The park's campground offers a total of 107 sites for tents and trailers, as well as access to a dump station. RV campers traveling in rigs up to 40 feet long are well-accommodated here, with 30-amp electric hookups available at most sites. Shawnee State Park campground amenities include bathhouses with hot showers, flush toilets, and laundry facilities. There are also 20 equestrian sites with bathrooms, as well as cabins and cottages, all of which are spacious and well-kept.

Some sites do allow pets, but you should check the rules before choosing your site. When visitors bring a pet, they must supervise their pet at all times and keep them on a leash six feet or shorter.

Exploring the Area

Along Ohio Brush Creek in Peebles, Ohio, you can find Serpent Mound, a National Historic Landmark and popular attraction with well-preserved history. Ancient Native American cultures built this mound over 1,000 years ago to represent a snake with a curled tail. Near the mound, there are three smaller burial mounds. One burial mound was made by the Fort Ancient culture and two by the Adena culture. Rent an RV in Adams County to dive deeper into their rich history.

While in the Scioto area, steer your RV rental into Portsmouth and check out Portsmouth Raceway Park. The dirt track, built back in 1990 for mini-sport racing, spans three-eighths of a mile. Sprint race cars can have fun and compete here weekly as the track hosts events every week throughout the year. For anyone into racing, this stop is a must-see.

Adena State Memorial, located in Chillicothe, Ohio, includes the beautifully restored home of Thomas Worthington, Ohio's first U.S. senator. It features the vast mansion built in 1807 and plenty more in the visitors' center and museum. You can walk through many types of gardens originally planted by the Worthington family, including fruit orchards and vegetable gardens. The area surrounding Shawnee State Park has much more to offer, so rent an RV in Ross County to get the full experience.
