Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is a park quite unlike any other. Located in south-central Ohio, it is home to groups of large, geometric earthworks. The earthworks were created by the Hopewell culture, and although we know a little about this culture, a sense of mystery still remains around why the mounds were built, and why artifacts were buried underneath them. There are five units within the park, all of which are worth exploring.

The Hopewell Culture National Historical Park covers nearly 1,800 acres, with trails available to explore the main historical sites, as well as a visitors’ center where you can learn more about those who used to inhabit the lands. This fascinating park is often the reason that people rent an RV in Ross County and is easily reachable from the nearby towns of Chillicothe, Piketon, and Circleville.

Getting Outdoors

There are several interesting interpretive trails that wind their way around the park. When camping at Hopewell Cultural National Historical Park, take a self-guided tour of the Mound City Group, which follows a route around the exterior of the mounds before meandering off into the forest. There is a longer trail at the Hopewell Mound Group, and this time the interpretive trail will actually take you into the interior of the massive earthwork enclosure and then again goes up into the forested section of the earthwork enclosure. Hikers will be able to see a portion of the original earthen wall that spared destruction.

As well as these shorter interpretive trails, there is also a multi-use trail within the park boundaries. A mile of the Tri-County Triangle Trail runs through the park, which runs for 28 miles overall, making it ideal for more experienced hikers. It connects the towns of Chillicothe, Frankfort, and Washington Court House, and is paved, making it accessible for most people who rent a camper near Columbus.

You can't go Hopewell Cultural National Historical Park camping without making a stop in the Visitor Center. Watch a film and have a look around the museum to learn more about the history of the park or enjoy a guided tour or a patio talk from knowledgeable staff. During the summer months, the tours can be enjoyed daily around Mound City Group and are free to park visitors.
