Discover Grayson Lake State Park

Getting Outdoors

There are plenty of great reasons to get outdoors at Grayson Lake State Park, but the biggest and best of them would have to be the lake itself. Created in 1968, this huge reservoir straddles Carter and Elliott Counties and is often a hive of activity.

Fishing is a favorite pastime for many campers, particularly during summer, and the lake's waters are home to bluegill, crappie, bass, catfish, and many other species. Boat launching ramps are provided to ensure easy access to the water. A marina is located a few miles outside the boundaries of the park. Water skiing and general cruising are also popular on the lake, so there's plenty to enjoy even if you're not a keen angler.

Back on dry land, the number-one attraction is the 18-hole Hidden Cove Golf Course. Surrounded by towering trees, the gently rolling fairways and huge bunkers offer a challenging day out for keen golfers. Best of all, the course is peaceful and secluded, so playing a round is usually a wonderfully relaxing experience (even if your short game deserts you).

When you've finished your round, the other major activity on offer in Grayson Lake State Park is hiking. There are a couple of hiking trails to choose from, each of which offers a chance to get up close and personal with the native plants and wildlife.

If you're looking for a quick adventure, the Beech Hemlock Trail is a good place to start. Not only will you see plenty of examples of the two tree varieties after which the trail is named, but you'll also get a good look at Lizard Head Rock on the shores of the lake. And if you're after a longer trek, the three-mile Lick Falls Trail leads you to a pretty waterfall near the park's western boundary.

Camping at Grayson Lake State Park

If you want to camp with an RV at Grayson Lake State Park, search for a rental RV in Carter County and then reserve a site in the park's spacious campground. Open from the start of April until mid-November, the campground features 69 electrical sites.

Many sites receive a decent amount of shade from nearby trees. Showers, flush toilets, laundry facilities, and a dump station are all provided. A small playground will keep younger campers occupied. The camp store is a convenient place to stock up on the essentials. Other features include fire rings, a horseshoe pit, a volleyball court, and a basketball court.

Pets are welcome in the campground, but you'll need to keep your pooch on a leash and make sure to clean up after them whenever necessary.

Exploring the Area

The end of your Grayson Lake State Park RV camping vacation doesn't necessarily mean the end of your vacation. There are loads of other wonderful attractions worth exploring nearby, so you can always take the scenic route home if you want to extend your adventure.

Steer your rental RV east towards West Virginia and you can be in Charleston in around an hour and a half. If you're a history buff, you'll love exploring the city's West Virginia State Museum and Culture Center.

Head southwest and Lexington is less than a two-hour drive away. Craft beer lovers will have a great time checking out the city's "Brewgrass Trail." Equestrian enthusiasts will want to add the Kentucky Horse Park to their itinerary.

Of course, if you'd rather spend a little more time getting back to nature, Daniel Boone National Forest is within easy reach of Grayson Lake State Park. Home to some of the steepest, most unforgiving terrain this side of the Appalachian Mountains, this untamed wilderness area offers plenty of opportunities for exploration.

There really is a hugely diverse range of experiences on offer when you rent an RV near Grayson Lake State Park. Why not hit the road and pay this beautiful Kentucky park a visit?
