If campers venture a little way out of the state park, they will arrive at ‘Creekside Cabins & RV Park,’ an alternative campsite. Full water, sewage, and electricity hookups are again provided here, alongside flushing toilets, a shower block, and dump station. Pets are more than welcome on site but must be kept on a leash at all times.

Exploring the Area

Located within the state park itself is ‘Mountain Homeplace,’ a replication of a 19th-century Kentucky farmstead. This living history museum is the perfect place to visit for the entire family. You will be entertained and educated at the same time, learning about what it took to run a farm over one hundred years ago. Tour guides dressed in period clothing will guide you around the village and demonstrate historic crafts such as forging horseshoes and quilting. There is also an on-site gift shop that sells a range of souvenirs.

The nearby town of Paintsville is home to the ‘U.S 23 Country Music Highway Museum.’ A museum that showcases the history of country music in the area. The museum celebrates the fact many of the world’s top country music stars were born or raised within a few square miles of Highway 23 in eastern Kentucky. The museum has a range of exhibits showcasing the work of stars like Loretta Lynn, Billy Ray Cyrus, and many many more. This is a must-visit for any country fan or music fan in general.

Those willing to make the drive west to the city of Lexington will be rewarded with an extensive list of day-tripping and sight-seeing opportunities. The ‘Kentucky Horse Park’ located on the north side of the city is a fantastic day out for the whole family. This working horse farm and educational theme park is a ‘one of a kind’ place and a must-see when in Lexington. Visitors can learn about all aspects of ‘man’s relationship with the horse’ or watch the ‘Horses of the World’ show - this showcases rare horses from around the globe.
