Getting Outdoors

Minam State Recreation Area is bisected by the Wallowa River, a tributary of the Grande Ronde River. This great river covers nearly all of the park from north to south, making it one of the most popular recreational areas in north Oregon for fishermen and women. The Wallowa River is home to a wide range of freshwater game fish, perfect for Minam State Recreation Area campers to get their angling fix. Fish species here include rainbow trout, ribbon trout, chinook salmon, bull trout, and many more.

As well as the world-class trout fishing, Minam State Recreation Area and its Wallowa River also offer visitors the perfect opportunity for a little boating. The river is most well known for being the ideal location for white water rafting. Kayaking and canoeing your way down this valley river offers awe-inspiring views of the surrounding hills and treelines. Those campervan camping without boats of their own can always head to the Minam Store just south of the Minam State Recreation Area. Campers can rent a verity of boats here and enjoy them out on the river.

It is not only the draw of the Wallowa River that brings visitors to the Minam State Recreation Area. The vast areas of woodland and mountain sides provide ample opportunities for hiking and wildlife watching. Hiking trails loop around the entire Minam State Recreation Area, with routes varying in both length and difficulty. The plethora of wildlife here also makes a venture out into the green lands, all the more worth it. Keep your eyes open for sightings of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, deer, elk, bears, and maybe even a cougar.

Camping at Minam State Recreation Area

Those RV camping at Minam State Recreation Area will find only dry camping within the state park itself. Although there are no hookups here, there are several on-site facilities. These facilities include vault toilets, running water, picnic tables, and fire rings. There are also many pull-thru sites at the Minam State Recreation Area campground, and this means all sizes of rigs are welcomed here. Pers are also welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times.

Venture a little further south, and campers will come to Wallowa River RV Park. Full hookups are provided here; these include 20, 30, 50 amp electric, water, and sewage hookups. Facilities include a dump station, flushing toilets, shower blocks, laundry services, and RV storage services.

Exploring the Area

Campers with a taste for all things history, both local and national, should head to the Wallowa County Museum in the town of Joeseph. This small yet enticing museum is home to a wide range of exhibitions and installations, showcasing a plethora of history from this part of the United States. The building the museum is held in is also of historical importance. Constructed in 1888, the building was initially known as the first bank of Joseph building. Now visitors can view exhibitions all about Wallowa County’s early settlers, right up to its modern-day significance.

Joseph is also home to the Natural History Discovery Center, a perfect day out for the whole family, especially for those with a love of the great outdoors. At the center, visitors can learn all about the diverse natural surroundings of eastern Oregon. This is done through a myriad of ever-changing exhibitions at the center and its fun-filled outreach programs. Children will also have fun at the Natural History Discovery Center’s children’s room, specially designed to engage the little ones to get involved with nature.

Just an hour drive south from the Minam State Recreation Area is the iconic National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. This center covers a large 23,000-square-feet of room, all dedicated to showcasing the history of the Oregon Trail. Through interpretive programs, detailed exhibitions, and live history demonstrations, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of the Oregon Trail.
