Getting Outdoors

Hilgard Junction State Park features a short hiking trail along the Grande Ronde River. Cottonwood and pine trees line the landscape, so make sure you have a camera with you to capture the gorgeous nature of this part of Oregon. The trail is 1.6 miles long and mostly flat, meaning that it is suitable for hikers of all levels. The famous Oregon Trail once passed through this state park, and hikers may still see the traces of the ruts during their walk. This place is even more beautiful in fall when the leaves turn brown, and the first signs of frost show up in the morning.

Camping at Hilgard Junction State Park

Hilgard Junction State Park has a small campground, with only 18 sites available for long vehicles. Located next to the water, the campground offers panoramic views of the area. The sites are spacious and paved. Even though it doesn’t have any hookups available, the campground is equipped with basic amenities. These include restrooms, fire pits, and picnic tables.

Exploring the Area

Eastern Oregon might not be as attractive to tourists as the coast or Portland, but there are still many small communities here that are worth a visit. One of them is Pendleton, a charming place that looks like a movie set for a western. Almost everything here is old West-themed, making Pendleton one of the most interesting destinations in the Pacific Northwest. Hilgard Junction State Park campers could take a drive up here and spend an afternoon exploring this unique city. One of the most visited places in Pendleton is the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute. The institute is focused on preserving the culture of three Native American tribes that lived in Eastern Oregon – the Umatilla, Walla Walla, and Cayuse tribes. The permanent exhibits showcase the fascinating culture and traditions of these tribes through various artifacts and texts.

We had talked with Talitha on the phone at 11 am on the day of our trip letting her know the time we would arrive in in Baker city at 2pm. she agreed to meet us. when we arrived she was not at the designated spot , we called , she said the generator was sounding funny and had taken it to a small engine repair and as soon as they finished she would meet us. we tried calling her a short while later and she didn't answer our call. we tried calling a few more times , no answer. Then we called Outdoorsy, because we began to wonder if she was even going to show up. 1 1/2 hours later when we were talking to a representative from Outdoorsy, she arriived. she messaged us on the 25th telling us to give her a call when we were leaving our campsite to let her know when we would be there. she never answered any of our calls. we arrived at 11am we waited for 43 minutes, and finally had to leave the trailer, again we called Outdoorsy representitive and told them what was happening. We had a 7 hour trip ahead of us and needed to go. We did have trouble with the generator, having to turn it off and on about three times before the air conditioning worked, the bed that was the bench seats for the table, had to be worked on because it wouldn't stay up. we had troubles with the generator all days and saturday the battery quit and the refrigerator quit working in the middle of the night. The shower and the main bed were really nice. we did not use the kitchen as we had other arrangements for cooking. Also the trailer lights did not work . We appreciated all the help from Outdoorsy but the host did not have things working properly on the camper.
