As previously mentioned, Wasco is surrounded by a nearly endless number of parks, recreation areas, scenic overlooks, raging rivers, and towering mountains, so there is no limit to the fun in store for you when you arrive in town and pick up your Wasco campervan rental. Not sure where to head off to first? Deschutes River State Recreation Area is only a few miles outside of town, with miles of riverfront and jaw-dropping overlooks. There are only around 30 acres of land inside the recreation area, but it is jam-packed with hiking trails, fishing areas, swimming spots, and stunning vantage points perfect for photography at sunset and sunrise. Camping is also available when you visit the recreation area at the junction of the Columbia and Deschutes Rivers. Cottonwood Canyon State Park is found in the opposite direction, but still close to town. Hiking, biking, climbing, and fishing are some of the most commonly enjoyed activities in the park, and hiking to the adjoining Cottonwood Canyon Recreation Area is an option too. Mount Hood National Forest is among Oregon’s most famous features, named for the imposing Mount Hood that can be seen from all the way in Portland. There has been a large push to make this enchanting forest a national park due to its ethereal beauty and assortment of natural features. Mount Hood itself is the main focus of the park, and more than four million people visit each year to observe or climb this gigantic stratovolcano. Wildflower-laden meadows, old-growth pine forests, and hidden waterfalls are part of the magic when you set off to explore the vast wilderness contained inside this forest. On the northern side of the Columbia River over in Washington, Gifford Pinchot National Forest is quite similar to Mount Hood, even containing its own volcano, Mount Saint Helens. The Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument is the remnants of this once mighty volcano, now just a shell of its former self after an earth-shattering explosion in 1980. Both Mount Hood National Forest and Gifford Pinchot National Forest have a few campgrounds to choose from if you need a camping spot for your Wasco camper rental.
