Officially known as the Susquehanna Depot, Susquehanna is a small town on a river of the same name in northern Pennsylvania. It flourished with the arrival of the New York and Erie Railroad in 1848 and became a hub for building locomotives and railroad cars, with more than 700 workers employed here by 1865. Following the demise of the railroad industry in the 1970s, many of the railroad shop buildings were demolished, although the heritage-listed Susquehanna Hotel still stands today.

Susquehanna is still a charming town with a lively main street that makes it a great place to rent an RV while exploring Susquehanna County. It’s within easy access of family-friendly campgrounds in both Pennsylvania and New York State, as well as recreational reserves for hiking, fishing, and cross-country skiing.

Discover Susquehanna

The Great Outdoors

Pick up your motorhome rental in Susquehanna and make the short drive north to the Cascade Valley State Forest, which sprawls across 533 acres in New York’s Broome County. It’s traversed by an east-to-west recreation trail that’s accessible to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, as well as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during the winter months. There are also two wetlands within its bounds that are home to beavers, together with herons, ducks, and geese.

Also nearby is the Hawkins Pond Nature Area and the adjacent Hawkins Pond State Forest, which together offer around seven miles of walking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing trails. White pine, oak, and Norway spruce comprise this mixed-use plantation forest, with a 44-acre stand of 70-year-old evergreens that is quite impressive. Fishing is permitted from the shore of Hawkins Pond, and there’s a 10-acre wetland where herons and hawks are regularly spotted.

An hour’s drive east of Susquehanna lies the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, which stretches along more than 70 miles of the Delaware River. It encompasses the remains of the Delaware and Hudson Canal, as well as Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct (the oldest suspension bridge in the United States) and a museum dedicated to American author Zane Grey. Boating, fishing, and wildlife watching are the main activities along the waterway, with the river being the largest wintering site of bald eagles in the northeast.

RV Parks

Pick up your RV rental in Susquehanna and head over the border into New York State to the Pine Crest Campground in Windsor. This pet-friendly RV destination is set on 20 acres of riverfront woodlands and fields, with full hookups and 50-amp sites available. Take advantage of the swimming pool, children’s playground, and fishing pond, as well as a boat dock for canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing.

Also nearby is the Guestward Ho Family Campground in Deposit, which perches on the edge of a 15-acre freshwater fishing lake. Its spacious RV sites offer direct access to wooded trails, and there’s a 100-foot waterslide that the kids will love, with fishing for largemouth bass right on your doorstep.

Drive south from Susquehanna, and you’ll arrive at The Camp at East Lake, which offers a range of pull-throughs and full hookups with either 30 or 50-amp services. Pets are welcome if they’re on a leash, with a children’s playground, recreational courts, and a 40-acre lake for fishing, swimming, and boating.

You can also make the 35-minute drive to Johnson City and its Walmart where you may be able to set up for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City

Book an RV rental near Susquehanna and visit the American Indian Cultural Center, which details the history and culture of the Susquehannock people. Browse the unique collection of Native American art and artifacts that is on display, including ancient tools, modern-day pottery, and beaded jewelry. Learn about the center’s location near the northernmost reaches of the Susquehannock migration, as well as how their community was impacted in the 18th century by infectious diseases and warfare.

Susquehanna is also home to the heritage-listed Starrucca House, which forms part of the historic Erie Railroad Station. This three-story Gothic Revival building once housed rooms for 200 people before being converted into sleeping quarters for railroad workers at the turn of the 20th century. The passenger service that once traveled along the Lackawanna route was discontinued in 1970, and the building fell into disrepair, with current renovations transforming it into a historic railway museum.

A 20-minute drive from Susquehanna will see you in New Milford, which is home to the Old Mill Village Museum. It showcases a range of artifacts and handicrafts dating from the late-18th to early 20th centuries, as well as encompassing a covered bridge that was constructed in 1850. Numerous buildings of historic interest dot the grounds, with seasonal events that help to bring the history of the region to life.

Susquehanna is home to a small supermarket where you can pick up grocery supplies, as well as a couple of local eateries for dining out. There’s also a gas station if you need to fill up your camper rental in Susquehanna.
