Amistad Reservoir is located in the southwest corner of Texas, on the international border with Mexico. The reservoir actually spans the border between the two countries. It was formed by a dam on the Rio Grande River. The nearest town to the lake is Lake View, while the nearest larger town is Del Rio, found around 20 miles to the southwest. The nearest large city is San Antonio, which is almost 200 miles to the east.

This site is listed as a National Recreation Area. It is located in a very rural portion of, already rural, West Texas. The local ecosystem consists mostly of arid grassland and scrub brush that covers the nearby bluffs that line the river. Numerous activities can be enjoyed at this site, including hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and countless water sports.
