The Government Canyon State Natural Area was established in 1993 but started allowing the public to explore this Texas area in 2005. Currently, this area is open to the public for four days a week (from Fridays through Mondays) to allow scientists to carry on their research. Encompassing 12,244 acres, this natural area lies approximately eight miles away from Helotes and about 48 miles from New Braunfels. Its primary purpose is to protect Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone. The areas rocky and rugged terrain features canyons, creeks, and plains.

The dinosaur footprints are the main attraction at Government Canyon State Natural Area, but RVers will find plenty of other recreation activities, including fishing, birding, wildlife watching, and mountain biking. Getting Outdoors

Just for dinosaur enthusiasts, Government Canyon State Natural Area preserves well over 300 dinosaur footprints. Believed to have been formed over 100 million years ago, these dinosaur tracks lie along the Government Canyon Creek. They can be accessed by hiking the two and a half mile Joe Johnston Route. It is recommended that hikers interested in exploring these historic tracts should plan their hikes early in the morning, wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water with them.

There are over 40 miles of recreational trails in Government Canyon State Natural Area. Hiking is a favorite pastime for many visitors, thanks to the area's nice trail system. And if you prefer the company of your fur friends during the hike, there are two trails available.

Exploring the Area
