The Government Canyon State Natural Area was established in 1993 but started allowing the public to explore this Texas area in 2005. Currently, this area is open to the public for four days a week (from Fridays through Mondays) to allow scientists to carry on their research. Encompassing 12,244 acres, this natural area lies approximately eight miles away from Helotes and about 48 miles from New Braunfels. Its primary purpose is to protect Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone.
