Getting Outdoors

The river is the beating heart of Pedernales Falls State Park, so the first thing you should do when you arrive in the park is head for the water. During the warmer months, the river is a hive of activity as visitors young and old head to the designated swimming area to cool off.

The river itself flows over and around massive chunks of limestone, so while its waters are often calm they can also get quite rough and chaotic in parts. As a result, tubing, canoeing, and kayaking are also popular pastimes on the river, with put-in spots available at the swimming area and on Trammell's Crossing Trail. For safety reasons, put-ins and take-outs are prohibited in the area surrounding Pedernales Falls.

Speaking of the falls, the river's waterfalls make an impressive sight when in full flow. For the best views, take the half-mile Twin Falls Nature Trail to the scenic overlook and don't forget to pack your camera.

If you'd prefer a more challenging hike, there are plenty more options to choose from. With 20-odd miles of trails snaking their way through the park, hikers and mountain bikers are well catered for. If you're setting out on foot, the six-mile Wolf Mountain Trail takes you around Tobacco and Wolf mountains and also leads you to beautiful Arrowhead Pool. If you're getting around using pedal power, the 10-mile Juniper Ridge Trail offers a wide range of technical obstacles and is designed for advanced riders.

Camping at Pedernales Falls State Park

If you want to camp with an RV at Pedernales Falls State Park, the good news is that the campground features 69 electric sites that can accommodate RVs. All sites are centrally located to all amenities, but sites 11-20 are particularly suitable if you want easy access to the scenic overlook of Twin Falls.

All sites feature water, a 30-amp electricity hookup, picnic table, and lantern post. Restrooms with showers are available nearby and a dump station is provided for convenience. Leashed pets are also welcome in the campground, so don't forget to bring your furry friend along for the ride.

If you're planning on parking your RV for a night or two and heading somewhere a little more remote, Pedernales Falls State Park also has primitive walk-in campsites. However, please note that you're looking at a minimum two-mile hike to access these sites.

Exploring the Area

When you're not enjoying the river and the beautiful surrounds of Texas hill country, another great way to pass the time is to do a little wildlife watching. Pedernales Falls State Park is home to around 150 species of birds, including vultures, owls, roadrunners, and more. If you're a keen birder, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for rare species as you make your way around the park.

Then, once you've seen everything you want, set out to explore some of the region's many nearby attractions. Take a short drive to the west and you could be in Johnson City, which is home to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site. Dripping Springs, found just a 25-minute drive to the southeast, boasts breweries, wineries, and a thriving cultural scene.

Blanco State Park, situated along the beautiful Blanco River, is just a 25-mile drive to the southwest. And if you want to head for the big city, the many weird and wonderful delights of Austin are just 30 miles away.

So find an RV rental near Pedernales Falls State Park, pack your swimming trunks and your hiking boots, and get ready to have a great time exploring central Texas.
