An excellent way to explore south-central Texas is to book an RV in Edwards County. This county is near the southern border of Texas, less than 60 miles away depending on which route you take. While visiting Edwards County, be sure to do some camping at Kickapoo Cavern State Park, which is great for both recreation and lodging. This state park contains over 6,000 acres of land and was originally opened with limited access in 1991.

Near the park, and in the surrounding counties, are small cities like Del Rio and Brackettville. For guests seeking a large city experience, San Antonio is also decently close by, to the west. There are many attractions to be found in these towns, and the areas between them are also filled with a rich history in the form of monuments, museums, and marked sites. Because there is so much to see in so many different places in the area, renting an RV to explore the area is a great choice so that you aren’t tied town to hotels.

Getting Outdoors

Kickapoo Cavern State Park has a large selection of outdoor activities for guests to enjoy when they are camping with an RV. Given the park’s name, the most obvious of those attractions are the caves contained within park boundaries. There are 20 known caves, and the two largest ones found in the area are known as the Kickapoo Cavern and Stuart Bat Cave. Park visitors should never enter the caves without authorization. This is for the safety of both the guests and the cave inhabiting creatures.

For those of you who don’t like being underground, there are many hiking trails that meander through the park and offer stellar views. RV camping at Kickapoo Cavern State Park is a great way to explore all the trails, many of which will be easily accessible from your campsite. There are trails that take you around the caves, trails that lead to overlooks and panoramic views, and even some trails that allow for mountain biking. The latter are clearly marked to ensure there is no confusion, so be sure to abide by the signage when biking on trails.

While exploring both the caves and trails, keep your ears and eyes open for the calls of birds in the area. This park is home to over 200 migrant and resident species of birds, depending on the time of year. Guests can check out a pair of binoculars from the park headquarters during their visit, and there is a custom-built bird blind located there as well that provides an easy opportunity to spot birds without having to search for them.

All campsites have a cement slab, a lantern post, water, a fire ring, and grill, and moderate privacy provided by trees and bushes. In the communal sections of the campgrounds, there are flushing toilets and hot showers, and guests should be aware that there is no trash collection at the park, it is important to take your trash out with you while leaving. There are a few ADA compliant sites, so guests who desire them should call ahead to book them.
