Clay is a small town midway between Austin and Houston in Burleson County, Texas. It was named after the landowner A. Clay and originally called Clay Station as it was a stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad.

The terrain is generally flat and dominated by farms and woodlands, with several substantial bodies of water nearby, including Somerville Lake and Lake Conroe. Sam Houston National Forest is to the east, near the city of Conroe and just beyond that is Lake Livingston.

With flat country and good roads, all these areas are easy to explore when you book an RV in Burleson County.

The Great Outdoors

A short drive in your RV rental brings you to the slightly larger town of Somerville on the edge of Somerville Lake. Several recreational parks and numerous camping facilities have been established around the lakes shoreline which is managed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The lake has been stocked with various species of fish for recreational fishing, including bass, catfish, and crappie. Many boat ramps are available along the edges of the lake so that boats and canoes may be launched.

One of the largest parks on the edge of the lake is Lake Somerville State Recreational Area, on the northwestern edge. Within the park, you’ll find around twenty miles of nature trails for hiking, biking, and horse riding. The woodlands along the edges of the lake attract abundant wildlife, including deer, fox, bobcat, and many species of bird-life, making it a wonderful area for observing the animals and taking photographs.

Traveling east in your Clay travel trailer rental will bring you to Lake Conroe, a little way north of Houston. The lake is popular with water sport enthusiasts who regularly bring their boats and jet-skis, but it’s also great for fishing with plenty to catch. Covering an area of 21,000 acres and around 21 miles in length, there is plenty of space, and nearby you will find a wide range of restaurants and shopping opportunities.

RV Parks

Close to Somerville Lake and only a short drive in a camper rental from Clay is the Frank and Kev RV Park. This small campground offers just 13 sites, but they all offer electric, water, and sewer hookups, and there is free WiFi. The campground also offers shower and laundry facilities.
