Samual Damon was not, by any means, the first human to reside in the area. The Karankawa, a Native American tribe, are known to have resided in the area. Several artifacts, burial grounds, arrowheads, stone tools, and pottery shards have been found at the mound. Steve Austin, who is often referred to as the Father of Texas, organized volunteers to drive the Karankawa from the Texas coastal region in the early 1820s. The colonists repeatedly attacked the tribe, and it is believed that as of 1891, they were extinct.

Although the dome is still intact, it’s not easily visible today. Sometimes in the late 1980s, Texas started a “beautification” project and planted many trees and re-introduced native plants. Today, especially in springs and summers, the lush green trees and landscape obscure the mound.
