Named after the nearby Fort Gates, built as an outpost for the earliest Texas settlers, Gatesville, Texas is a quintessential small, central Texas city. Within easy driving distance to Waco, Austin, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area, you are never that far from the hustle and bustle of some of the larger Texas cities. When you book an RV in Coryell County, you will be able to explore dozens of other Hill County towns, many of Texas’s natural wonders, and you’ll be able to truly experience that famed Southern hospitality. With so many opportunities awaiting you in central Texas, you may find it hard to leave.

Discover Gatesville

The Great Outdoors

An easy drive south of Gatesville is Dana Peak Park near Belton. Dana Peak is made up of a sandy peninsula that juts into blue-green waters of Stillhouse Hollow Lake. At Dana Peak, you can enjoy boating and swimming in the lake, trying your luck at fishing, or instead head out for a leisurely stroll along the miles of lakeshore or go explore the meticulously cared for wetlands. Just make sure you wear sunscreen.

The perfect day trip destination is Lake Whitney State Park in Whitney. Another quiet retreat to one of the famed Texas lakes, Lake Whitney State Park offers visitors two hiking loops through the forest as well as plenty of points of access to enjoy Lake Whitney itself. Not only that, but history buffs are sure to enjoy the lake too. On the western side of the park are the ruins of Towash, an early settler community.

An easy day trip to take with the Gatesville campervan rental is just southwest of town. The Colorado Bend State Park near Lometa is an outdoor lover’s playground bursting with exploratory opportunities. You can set out on the 35 miles of hiking trails that trace their way through this Hill County landscape, marvel at the 65-foot-tall waterfall known as Gorman Falls, or even head underground in a guided cave tour. Not only that, you can relax either on the shores of the Colorado River or in it as you tube or boat down the river.

RV Parks

When you secure an RV rental in Gatesville, you’re going to want to make sure you have a place to park your RV for the night. Luckily enough, there are plenty of campgrounds and RV parks around town that are worth considering.

On the west side of town is the Hidden Valley RV Getaway. At Hidden Valley, you will have access to electric and water hookups and laundry facilities. Guests will also have access to various nature trails and fishing.

On the south side of town sits the Texas Station RV Park. At Texas Station, guests will have access to full hookups, restroom and shower facilities, and laundry facilities. Guests will also be able to use the Wi-Fi.

Explore the City

When you need to take a break between exploring all of the rivers and lakes and forests and hills, spend some time exploring the local community of Gatesville. There’s a lot to see and learn when you rent an RV in this Texas town, and you are sure to have an enjoyable time.

Located in the town center of Gatesville, the Coryell Museum Historical Center is home to several permanent exhibits that showcase the local history. You can learn about the history of Texas jails, an industry still thriving in this area, see a collection of roughly 10,000 spurs, and learn about the early settlers to the region. Each exhibit has its own little hidden gems so be sure to really peruse those cases.

If you’re looking for a fun but low-key night, then head to The Last Drive-In Picture Show on the south side of town. This drive-in movie theater is known for showing double features and entertaining huge crowds. There is also a snack bar on site, so you can satisfy any classic movie theater cravings you may get.

Just a short drive southwest of town is the Topsey Exotic Ranch & Park. At this drive-through safari, you are going to see upwards of 50 different species of animals calling this piece of Texas land home. And don’t worry when you see African species like ostriches and zebras here, the Texas climate is somewhat similar to that of the African savanna, so these transplanted creatures can still feel at home.

After your day of fun in the sun, you are going to need to replenish your personal fuel reserves. It's tough to find a state that does barbecue better than Texas does. The Lone Star State is all about the slow-cooked (12 to 18 hours) brisket. Slathered with a nice dry rub, the meat has all of the flavor it needs, you won’t even need any sauce. And if you don’t see sauce bottles on the tables or at the counter, it's probably best not to ask for any.

When you find yourself needing to restock and refuel your campervan rental in Gatesville, there are plenty of options in town to choose from.
