Experience the great outdoors when you visit the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park. The woods here are home to over 360 species of birds as well as bobcats, butterflies, javelinas, and much more. You’ll be able to watch from the two-story Hawk Observation Tower. The exhibit hall features bilingual (English/Spanish) exhibits and interpretive material. There are seven miles of trails in the park. Vehicles are not allowed, but there is a tram. Binoculars and bicycles are available for rent. Other recreational opportunities include hiking and picnicking. Ranger-led programs, including outdoor skills workshops, nature and wildlife talks, and Junior Ranger programs, are held throughout the year. The park store offers field guides, hats and t-shirts, gifts and souvenirs, and snacks.
The Padre Island National Seashore features the world’s longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island. It divides the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna Madre and provides habitat for the Kemp’s sea turtle and over 380 species of birds. The seashore has a storied past, including 16th-century shipwrecks, settlement by a Spanish priest, and service as a Navy bombing range. Recreational opportunities include swimming beaches, boating, paddling, hiking, fishing and hunting, and bird watching. Ranger programs for all ages include deck talks, plant walks, bird tours, stargazing, campfires, and Junior Ranger programs. The Malaquite Visitor Center features a museum, an information desk, a book and gift shop, and restrooms.

It also offers the Mustang Island State Park Paddling Trail with 20 miles of trails through shallow-water fishing areas and coastal bird habitats. Ranger programs for all ages are held throughout the year and include fishing, bird watching, star gazing, talks, and guided/themed tours.
