Beautiful Somerville Lake is a reservoir situated on Yegua Creek in Texas, just 10 miles from the popular town of Brenham. The town of Somerville sits next to the lake, and it is this picturesque attraction that often leads to people to search for an RV rental in Burleson County. However, the lake also extends out into Washington County and Lee County. Although the lake was created for flood control and irrigation water, it is also a very popular spot for recreational activities, largely thanks to Lake Somerville State Park that sits on its shores.

There are numerous other parks that also surround the Somerville Lake such as Rocky Creek Lake and Yegua Creek Park, as well as Pecan Lake Park and McCain Park. The towns of Caldwell, TX, and Bryan are also worth a visit. Fishing, boating, and hiking are the most popular activities in the area, drawing visitors from all over Texas and sometimes even further afield.

Discover Somerville Lake

Getting Outdoors

Take a long stroll down the Somerville Lake Trailway which covers a distance of 18 miles, connecting two units which make up part of the Lake Somerville State Park. In addition to this trail, there are over 40 miles of walks through the park that surround the lake, with each unit containing its own trails. Bikes and walkers are allowed on them all, and horse riders are able to make use of the trailway and various other tracks. This is a great way to witness the beauty of the lake and surrounding landscape while motorhome camping in the area. Whether you are looking for a quick stroll through the forest or a longer trek, you’ll be able to find it at Somerville Lake.

Anglers flock to the lake and state park RV campgrounds from all over the county in the hope of reeling in some hybrid, white and largemouth bass, many of who are successful. Crappie and catfish are also common catches. One of the reasons the lake is so popular with fishermen is the fact that you don't need a license to fish here from the shore or fishing jetty. However, you do need one if you are planning to head out onto the water in a boat. Should you not have your own fishing gear, you are able to rent some.

With such a large expanse of water to explore, it is hardly surprising that boat rental is available from the park surrounding the lake. Choose a canoe or kayak and head out on to the water to explore the waters and bays. Although not available to rent, motorized boats are allowed on the lake, and Birch Creek and Nails Creek both have boat ramps for easy access into the water.

Camping at Somerville Lake

There are several different options when it comes to camping with an RV at the lake. Lake Somerville Marina and Campground offers 168 acres of wilderness camping. There are 93 sites that offer both water and electricity, as well as picnic tables and fire rings. The grounds have a beach area, ideal for swimming, as well as playgrounds and a pavilion.

There is also camping available at Lake Somerville State Park. The campsite provides electricity and water hookups with restrooms nearby, making motorhome rental at Lake Somerville State Park a breeze. There are also campsites with electricity in the Nails Creek Unit, as well as an equestrian campsite which has all the usual amenities as well as a horse pen. On Lake Somerville Trailway, there are also a few primitive campsites available.

For group camping, there is a site in the Birch Creek Unit that contains 20 campsites and a central dining hall with views of the lake.

Downtown Brenham is always alive with activity no matter the time of year, and this is especially thanks to the Home Sweet Farm Market and Biergarten. As well as the chance to buy some of the freshest foods, the store and warehouse is now a popular place for community gatherings and music events. Another great place to experience local produce is Pleasant Hill Winery, with over 20 years of experience under their belt, it is one of the best places to go to expedite a range of local wines.

The best place to learn about everything Somerville is the Somerville Area Museum. The numerous exhibitions feature a range of historical photographs, memorabilia, artifacts, and more, all housed in a historic building in downtown Somerville. It's free to enter, and depending on when you visit; you may also be able to experience some visual arts and hands-on exhibits with the kiddos.
