Thorndale is a small city located between the Texas state capital of Austin in the west and the smaller city of Bryan in the east. The city was founded around 1878 but was moved three miles east to the present site in 1880.
The city was featured in the 2002 movie The Rookie, starring Dennis Quaid and Rachel Smith and was called Big Lake, Texas in the film. Many of the town’s residents appeared as extras and the downtown main street and baseball stadium where used as locations.
The area around Thorndale is mainly rolling hills and flat farmland, making it a perfect location for exploring when you book an RV in Milam County.
Just a short drive north of Austin in your RV rental is where you will find the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. This area was specifically protected in 1992 to provide a habitat for two endangered songbirds, the golden-cheeked warbler, and the black-capped vireo. Below the refuge lies a maze of caves and natural springs supporting a diverse range of spiders and insects. The refuge contains over eight miles of hiking routes for you to explore the habitat, and many special events are arranged during the year such as guided walks, workshops and festivals.

Also in Taylor is the Moody Museum, named after Texas Governor Dan Moody. During his term as the District Attorney for Travis and Williamson Counties, he was the first person to successfully prosecute members of the infamous Ku Klux Klan and had four Klansmen sent to prison in 1924. He is credited with having turned Texas from the most pro-Klan state to the most anti-Klan state in under 12 months.
