In the late 1800s, towns in rural Texas often sprang up when railroad companies, wanting to work with the local farmers and ranchers, built train stops in the boonies. Troy, TX, is one such town. It virtually popped up overnight in 1882. It remarkably was struck by a cyclone that had hopped from a large river (present-day Belton Lake), some 15 miles away.

Troy gained some brief attention in the early 1990s in the media when it temporarily renamed itself Troy Aikman in a nod to a prominent Dallas football player at the time. Today, Troy remains an agricultural town, though some of the residents work in Temple, a large town about 10 miles south.

The Great Outdoors

As fun as lakes are, they also have a major downside: swarms of pesky mosquitoes. A Troy travel trailer is a convenient escape while giving outdoorsmen more immediate access to all that nature has to offer. Fishing and boating on the Belton Lake, which is technically a reservoir, are popular activities for both locals and out-of-town visitors. Fishing is so abundant that the lake hosts an annual “Lonestar Throwdown” kayak-fishing tournament. Anglers can expect to catch largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, striped bass, catfish, and gar. The beaches along the shores of the lake allow for suntanning, spontaneous games of volleyball and frisbee, and picnicking.

Texas’ first state park, Mother Neff State Park is a small 259-acre park. In spite of its size, it has plenty to offer to adventurers and outdoorsmen. Two ecosystems allow for a variety of wildlife to roam. In the canyons, spot the sly coyotes and foxes and dodge skunks and porcupines. In the prairie, under the vast blue sky, search for hawks and eagles soaring high above.

Jackrabbits occasionally poke their head above the top of the wild grass, searching cautiously for predators. Small songbirds, more often heard than seen, whistle and chirp as they search for insects and seeds. On warm evenings, a few species of bats share the skies with birds as they search for pesky mosquitoes and other bugs. Bring your Troy camper rental as the small campground has hookups for RVs (book in advance during the high season).

RV Parks

When you search for an RV in Troy, TX, be sure to figure out where you’ll park it while you explore the area. In the rural rangelands, the country roads are narrow and difficult to find a safe pullover spot. There are several options within 20 miles of Troy.

Bruceville RV Park is a small, rustic facility in an open field. Though it does not have sewer hookups, there is a dump station nearby. It does include the other usual amenities like 30/50 amps hookups. Showers, and free WiFi, though.

White Flint Park near Moody overlooks one of the rivers that feed into Belton Lake. Although the campground is very small with only 13 lots and limited amenities, the immediate access to riverside fishing may be worth the tradeoff.

Exploring the City

Although Troy is a classic small town with very few stores and restaurants, the neighboring towns have plenty of attractions that are easy to reach in a motorhome rental. Texas is well known for its passion for golf, and there are several public and private fairways in the area. Sammon Golf Links is paralleled by a small creek that performs double duty: it’s both a water hazard and relaxant. The babbling sound as water tumbles over rocks makes for a pleasant background sound. Though this fairway is ideal for beginners, experienced players will also enjoy this due to the challenging bunkers and hazards.

On the outskirts of Bryan, Aggieland Safari takes a page from Jurassic Park movie series. Visitors enter through a giant gated archway and are greeted by the sounds of exotic wildlife as they roam the nearly open space. Guests have a choice of visiting the zoo where they can feed giraffes and tortoises or embarking on a drive-thru safari. The wild animals have free roam of over 250 acres, and guests can see these animals behaving as if they were in their natural habitats. Critters include zebras, Tibetan yaks, and antelopes.

Hop into a luxury RV rental and tour the towns in search of the best BBQ restaurant. Locals and out-of-towners will often engage in a good-natured debate on who makes the best BBQ sauce or rub, where to get the best BBQ, and how to prepare it. Start at Backyard Barbecue in Belton which delivers with its charming country decor, picnic tables, and a wall of local and international beers.

Warm Texas sunshine, vast blue skies, and wide-open prairies await you on your outdoor adventure. Load up the family and head out to make new memories in a Texas RV rental!
