Hoover Lake, Utah, is located in Duchesne County and part of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The lake was formed naturally thousands of years ago and is a beautiful spot, surrounded by conifers.

The surrounding area is mountainous, with many small natural lakes and very little development, making it a great area to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. There are no nearby communities, but there are numerous campgrounds, mostly just basic sites with water and toilets. Book an RV Duchesne County, and a beautiful area of the United States is open for you to explore.

The nearest town is Kamas on the western edge of the national forest, while some miles further west is the metropolis of Salt Lake City. To the north is the Wyoming town of Evanston that would be a great location to stock up on the way to camp near Hoover Lake.

Getting Outdoors

Hoover Lake is at the end of a narrow road in the heart of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, in a mountainous and beautiful location. The lake is a popular spot for anglers and is regularly restocked with brook trout, and you may also catch cutthroat trout here. The road is not great, so if you’re camping with an RV in the area, it is probably better to hike to Hoover Lake.

Hiking is one of the most popular activities here, with plenty of marked routes to follow graded from easy to hard. There is something for everyone. The Fehr Lake Trail starts from the Mirror Lake Highway near Moosehorn Lake and is a 3.5-mile out and back trail that leads to Hoover Lake. It’s rated as moderate, as some of the routes has steep climbs on rocky creek beds, so probably not suitable for younger family members.

For an easier family hike, try the Mirror Lake Trail just a few miles north. This 1.5-mile loop trail is an easy graded hike around Mirror Lake that is suitable for the whole family, with beautiful views over the lake. The trail starts and ends near the Mirror Lake campground and is a great place to spot local wildlife.

Camping at Hoover Lake

The nearest campground to Hoover Lake is Moosehorn Campground at Moosehorn Lake. The campground offers over 30 sites, but there are no electrical, water or sewer hook-ups here. You will need to bring all the water you need for drinking, cooking, and washing, as there are no water supplies. This really is back to basics camping! You will find a picnic table and fire ring at each site though, and there are vault toilets.

A mile or so north is Mirror Lake campground with over 70 sites, which is still very basic but does have water supplies. There is also an amphitheater in the campground that holds live music events during the summer. Make sure you have stocked up your rental RV with plenty of supplies if you are staying overnight at either of these campgrounds.

To the south, on the Strawberry Reservoir is the Strawberry Bay Campground. While still a basic campground, it does offer a full hook-up facility on some sites, flushing toilets, drinking water, and a dump station.

For an RV resort, with multiple facilities, maybe the Knotty Pines campground on the southwest edge of the national forest will be suitable. Along with full RV hook-ups, you’ll also find a swimming pool, volleyball, and basketball courts, a clubhouse, and a laundry facility. This could be the perfect spot for motorhome camping with the family.

Exploring the Area

There are few if any facilities within the national forest, so make sure you stop at one of the towns before venturing further if you intend to camp overnight in your rental RV. Make sure you have plenty of drinking water, food, and fuel before setting off.

The town of Kamas on the western edge of the forest has all the basic facilities you need, such as a gas station, restaurants, and shopping facilities.

The kids will love a visit to the RunDown Ranch Kids Farm while you are in Kamas. At this petting farm, you can also feed and groom the animals and really get up close to the 18 different species, including alpacas, goats, sheep, pygmy pigs, and many more.

In Kamas, there are many companies that can arrange guided tours, off-road vehicle rental, and numerous other activities to get into the more remote areas of the forest.

When you are leaving Kamas to head into the national forest, a stop at the Provo River Falls could make a nice break in the driving. Although the falls are not huge, there are several levels to explore, and you can wade in the river and falls.

To discover more of the local history, try a visit to the Park City Museum, just a few miles outside Salt Lake City. The museum explores the life of early settlers to the area through exhibits and collections of documents. The town economy was originally based around mining, but the museum explains how the inhabitants transformed the city into a ski resort.
