San Juan Island National Historical Park is located near Friday Harbor, Washington. The historical park is situated on the southern tip of San Juan Island, which is found within the Haro Strait. This branches off the Pacific Ocean which is located farther to the west. It is one of the farthest western islands that is still within the borders of the US in this area, as it is located just east, across the strait, from Canada's Vancouver Island.

There are ferries that connect this series of islands with the mainland. One of the larger towns, locally, is Oak Harbor that is located on a spit of land that sits close to the mainland. Other bigger cities found nearby include Everett and Seattle's metro area.

Exploring the Area

The Cattle Point Lighthouse sits on a corner of the island. A light has stood guard over the sound from this point since the 1800s. A walking path takes you near the lighthouse and offers prime views of the surrounding waterway. Local wildlife is regularly seen on the nearby rocks, including seals and sea lions.
