Getting Outdoors

When it comes to the great outdoors, Fort Flagler State Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. If it’s trails you’re looking for, hiking at Fort Flagler State Park should be high on your to-do list. Over five miles of hiking and biking trails allow you to explore every nook and cranny of the park. You can also walk the two-mile beach trail along the sandy shores of the peninsula. Some trails will even take you to the old batteries once used for protection during the two World Wars and the Korean War.

If it isn’t too cold, you can enjoy some water sports in Puget Sound. Anglers can post up at the 255-foot dock and cast a line. Depending on the season, you can expect to catch a variety of salmon species, as well as bass and rockfish. Clamming and crabbing are also popular activities on the shores of Fort Flagler.

Since the park is on a peninsula, you’ll also find tons of great places to swim. Whether you bring your own boat from home or rent one nearby, there's also plenty of room to launch and cruise along the water at your leisure. Just make sure you have a launch permit before setting out.

Camping at Fort Flagler State Park

Camping with an RV at Fort Flagler State Park is easy. The campground offers 59 standard sites and 55 full-hookup campsites spread across two camping areas for RV rentals. You’ll find a dump station where campers can dispose of their waste, as well as two public restrooms. In the upper camping area, sites can accommodate RV rentals up to 25 feet long. In the lower part, sites fit rigs up to 50 feet long. Bear this in mind when choosing your site.

Some sites have fire rings where campers can host campfires and tell stories of the day's adventures under the stars. RV camping at Fort Flagler State Park is a wonderful way to reconnect with nature, bring the family closer together, and make the most of your trip.

Exploring the Area

Fort Flagler is just as rich in history as it is recreational activities. History buffs should check out the on-site Military Museum. Explore the old abandoned batteries that held strong during some of the world's biggest wars. You can walk the grounds on your own or take a guided tour with a professional and see the gun emplacements and military hospital built in 1905. It’s these aspects of the park that set it apart from others in the area, making each visit truly special.

Looking for a family-friendly activity that everyone can enjoy? Head over to the Port Townsend Marine Science Center. This place is full of exhibits meant to inspire activists young and old to learn all they can about the local marine life and what measures they can take to protect them. Take a wildlife cruise that gets you up close and personal with animals like sea lions, seals, and various seabirds. There are also beach walks where visitors can get their hands dirty learning about all the great wildlife that lives on and near the shores.

Only about half an hour away in Port Townsend, you’ll be able to see the Jefferson Museum of Art & History. In this museum, you’ll find tons of interesting artifacts representing the people and cultures of Jefferson County throughout history. Treasures on display include art pieces from the natives who originally inhabited this area, as well as items from Jefferson County’s past and present residents.

When your gas tank is getting low and it's time to hit the road, it’s worth noting that the nearest gas station is about 20 minutes away. Due to the park's location on a peninsula, luxuries tend to be a bit further away than normal. As far as restaurants go, there's a cafe in the park itself, but once again, you need to leave the peninsula to find the next closest option. On the mainland, you’ll find some pizza joints and a few burger spots, but if you make the trip to Port Townsend, you’ll find more variety like Chinese, sushi, and seafood. The closest major road is Highway 101, which can take you all the way to Olympia.
