Camping here will also provide easy access to the entire park’s extensive recreation.

A few miles west of Stonewall Jackson State Park is ‘Whisper Mountain RV Park.’ This park offers RV campers full electrical, water, and sewage hookups. Facilities here include a dump station, shower block, flushing toilets, laundry service, RV storage service, and an on-site swimming pool. Pets are also welcome on site but must be kept on a leash at all times.

Exploring the Area

The nearby city of Weston holds many points of interest for those who wish to venture outside of Stonewall Jackson Park and explore the area. The ‘Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum’ is one of the town’s most famous and interesting sights, for its architectural aesthetic and historical importance alone. The building itself is one the largest hand-cut stone building in all of the US, and the second largest in the world - second only the Kremlin in Moscow. Visitors can come and take a guided tour of the former asylum and learn about the 19th-century running of the institution and all that came with it.

Weston is also home to the ‘Mountaineer Military Museum,’ a fantastic military-inspired museum preserving the history of those who fought in many of the USA’s wars. The museum commemorates soldiers and military personnel from West Virginia who served in the First World War, Second World War, Korean War, Vietnam War, and many other modern conflicts. The museum is curated from the point of view of honoring local people who served for their country and is tastefully done so. This is a must-see for any West Virginia local with an interest in the US’s military history.

It is worth campers making the hour drive southwest to West Virginia’s biggest city and capital, Charleston. Charleston is home to, among many things, the ‘West Virginia State Museum.’ This extensive museum hosts a wide range of exhibits, showcasing the verity of history from West Virginia. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the museum, learning about the state’s rich history. The exhibits range from the early Native American tribes, through to the arrival of the Europeans, right up to the modern era. Visitors of all ages will learn a little something new about the state and have an entertaining time doing so.
