Founded in 1924, Seneca State Forest is one of West Virginia’s oldest forests. Spanning over 11,684 acres, Seneca State Forest is known not only for its stunning landscape but the rich history which can still be experienced and learned about today thanks to the numerous pioneer cabins left behind.

The area tends to have somewhat comfortable temperatures throughout the year, although summers can be very humid, and late winter can result in major snowfall. The state forest is a short drive away from Snowshoe and Lewisburg.

Getting Outdoors

There are plenty of things to do outdoors while at Seneca State Forest, and one activity is hiking. Hikers will find numerous pathways to trek down that will take you by beautiful landscapes. There are over 23 miles of hiking trails to choose from that go through rolling hills and provide views of the Greenbrier River. A few will also go by the park’s historic fire tower that can be climbed up for panoramic views of the forest.

While here, visitors could also go fishing. There are a few waterways to fish in, but one of the best fishing destinations in the state forest is Seneca Lake. Some species fishers will find here include bluegill and bass. There is a fishing pier available, although keep in mind that you do need a fishing license to fish here.

Guests to the state forest could also try playing horseshoes, golf, or volleyball. The forest features a few recreational areas that have a handful of horseshoe pits and volleyball courts for guests to use. There is also a large 18-hole golf course nearby.

Camping at Seneca State Forest

When you book an RV in Pocahontas County, you will be able to stay at a handful of campgrounds situated near Seneca State Forest. One of these options is East Fork Campground. Open from May to September, and this RV campground has 167 sites that have amenities such as electricity, water, showers, and a dumping station. You’ll also find a few basketball courts, a playground, and a boat ramp on the grounds.

Another close motorhome campground is the Day Run Campground. This RV campground is open from March to November offers a handful of camper sites that comes with amenities such as toilets and a hand pump for water. This campground is pet-friendly.

Campers to the area could also keep their travel trailer at Tea Creek Campground. This option has 28 sites and offers views of the Williams River and Tea Creek. This pet-friendly campground has water, toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables available for guests. The sites here are first-come-first-served, and the campground is open from March to November.

Exploring the Area

For those who would like to venture out into the surrounding area with their RV, you’ll find a handful of destinations to stop by at. In Lewisburg, there’s the Harmony Ridge Gallery. This art gallery showcases the work of numerous artists throughout the United States. Visitors can tour the gallery to view the pieces or even invest in a few to take home. Besides paintings, you’ll also find handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, and woodwork.

While in Lewisburg, stop by Lost World Caverns. This National Natural Landmark is known for its impressive geological formations and waterfalls. There are numerous tours available for visitors to choose from, including a four-hour one that will take you deep into the cave requiring you to crawl through small gaps and mud puddles. When you’re done exploring the caverns, visitors could stop by its natural history museum and gift shop that sells unique souvenirs.

Less than 30 minutes away in Green Bank is the Green Bank Observatory. The observatory was built in 1990 and is home to the Green Bank Telescope, one of the largest steerable radio telescopes in the world. Guests can take a tour of a few of its facilities, such as a science center and exhibit hall.

Visitors could also drive their camper to Hillsboro to check out the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area. Featuring over five bogs, this botanical area is home to a variety of different plants and animals, such as cranberries, skunk cabbage, sundew, bears, and beavers. It also contains part of the Cranberry River, which is a popular fishing stream.

While Seneca State Forest is in a somewhat secluded location, there are still a handful of gas stations situated nearby. There are also a few restaurants a short drive away from the forest, most of which serve comfort food. For those looking to try some local dishes and snacks, a few to consider are cornbread, coleslaw, apple dumplings, and baked steak.
