Getting Outdoors

A state park that's as connected to nature as Keyhole State Park is sure to have plenty of activities. Hikers will find a couple of trails to tackle. These include the Marina Trail and the Cottonwood Trail. Both trails are fairly easygoing, particularly the Marina Trail. It's a mile and a half long and is paved with concrete, making it easy for everyone to walk along. The Cottonwood Trail, a dirt trail just under three miles long, is a little more challenging. However, the views you'll get on the trail will be well worth it in the end, especially if you enjoy watching the local wildlife.

In addition to hiking, water activities abound at Keyhole Reservoir. This massive lake is the perfect area for you to go boating or fishing. In fact, some of the largest fish in all of Wyoming have been caught in this very reservoir, which just goes to show how rich it is in marine life. There’s also a beach along the reservoir, although no pets, fishing, or boats are allowed. Instead, you can enjoy simply soaking up the sun with friends and family.

If you choose to camp at Keyhole State Park in the winter, you can expect the snow on the ground will make an excellent environment for snowmobiles. These are just some of the reasons why you should consider going camping at Keyhole State Park.

Camping at Keyhole State Park

Keyhole State Park has plenty of space to accommodate your camper rental. In total, there are 286 RV campsites spread across ten campgrounds. Only 32 sites have electric hookups, most of which are 50-amp. Make sure to book in advance if you need an electric site. As for water hookups, these are available seasonally, and they typically won’t open until the frost clears.

The campsites have many amenities for you and your family to enjoy, including restrooms, grills, dump stations, and showers. There are also special fish cleaning where you can prepare your catch for dinner if you plan on fishing at Keyhole State Park. The campground and park are pet-friendly as long as your pup stays on a leash and their best behavior.

Exploring the Area

While you're renting an RV, you'll probably want to explore the area around the park, where you'll find a variety of attractions, including museums and historic sites. The Crook County Museum & Art showcases the history of the area, displaying thousands of artifacts ranging from guns to instruments. Another museum you'll want to check out is the Campbell County Rockpile Museum. Located in the city of Gillette, this museum provides insight on the area's indigenous history through Native American items, fossils, and weapons. Finally, the last museum that you'll want to stop by is the Eagle Butte Mine Lookout. Here, you'll be able to see what working in a coal mine was like.

If museums aren’t your style, you might want to stop at the famous Devil’s Tower National Monument instead. This nationally known landmark is located about 21 miles north of Keyhole State Park. This spot houses many different museums and areas where you can learn more about this curious landform. The trip will be well worth it if you're interested in learning about the land.

And finally, when you need to stock up on supplies for your motorhome camping trip, you'll find an array of convenience stores nearby, as well as a marina within the park that offers basic provisions. Both Sundance and Moorcroft are within a few miles of the park, which will take care of your fuel needs.
