Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park was previously part of a large land tract granted to Spanish settlers that was purchased by the Bentsen family; the Bentsens cultivated the area north of the park but left the remaining area undisturbed. The family sold the park area to the Texas Parks Board in 1944 with the stipulation that it be used solely as a public park and operated under its present name. The park is part of a larger refuge, the World Birding Center, and has more than 300 identified bird species residing in or passing through its boundaries.
