Discover Rio Grande City RV rentals for memorable road trips

Rio Grande City is the county seat of Starr County, Texas; the surrounding area was first settled in 1846. It was chosen because it was the farthest point up the Rio Grande River that could be accessed by steamboats. The city was established in 1848 and soon became a trade hub between Texas and Mexico and the heart of the romanticized version of the American Wild West. Today there are many notable historic buildings in Rio Grande City, such as La Borde House, a two-story brick building containing a restaurant and hotel; the hotel once hosted President Lyndon Johnson's wife while visiting to see the area's wildflowers.

The Great Outdoors

Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park was previously part of a large land tract granted to Spanish settlers that was purchased by the Bentsen family; the Bentsens cultivated the area north of the park but left the remaining area undisturbed. The family sold the park area to the Texas Parks Board in 1944 with the stipulation that it be used solely as a public park and operated under its present name. The park is part of a larger refuge, the World Birding Center, and has more than 300 identified bird species residing in or passing through its boundaries. Birders can witness migrating species and species that can't be found anywhere else in the country. Guests can walk or rent bicycles to traverse the park or take a guest shuttle. There are a few bird blinds, a hawk tower, and a wheelchair accessible tower that provides views over the tree canopy and into Mexico. The visitor center has a bilingual (English/Spanish) exhibit hall, gift store, butterfly gardens, and hummingbird feeders.

Exploring The City

Visitors exploring Rio Grande City and the surrounding area should begin with a visit to a local basilica; the original was a small wooden shrine which was rebuilt in 1954 and replaced a second time due to a fire. The current shrine draws pilgrims by the thousands from all over Latin America and is housed in a historic movie theater that screens locally produced films. There is an Iwo Jima Memorial statue (the original iconic statue of soldiers planting the American flag on the island) and a visitors center with exhibits detailing the battle for the island. A local ferry, the last hand-drawn ferry in the country, crosses a nearby river into Mexico (passports are required).

We did not have an RV. We rented a trailer from Roberto Garcia. Our favorite experience was watching 2 SpaceX launches.

Mrs. Hinojosa was a wonderful host. She made sure the trailer was clean, with towels and bed linen for my trip. The trailer itself is in very good condition. I slept like a baby.
