With water to the east and to the west, Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area is all about watersports. For some campers, the best way to enjoy the park's enviable location is to pack a fishing rod. You can either cast a line from the riverbank on the western edge of the park, or head east to the sandy beach and fish from the shore. Fish species caught in the park include flounder, whiting, red drum, and more. If you're lucky, you'll get to enjoy some freshly caught fish cooked up on your campsite grill. If you'd prefer something a little more active, perhaps you'd like to take a kayak out on the Intracoastal Waterway. Single kayaks and tandem kayaks and canoes are available for rent from the ranger station and can be launched from the boat ramp or a nearby sandy spot. Once you set out for a paddle, keep your eyes peeled for some of the local wildlife — from beautiful native birdlife to manatees and dolphins, there's plenty to see. When the mercury rises, another favorite pastime for campers at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area is swimming. There's around half a mile of beach where you can wade into the water and cool off, but take note that there's no lifeguard on duty. Surfing is also popular here, so feel free to bring a board along if you have one. The beach itself is a great spot to go for a stroll or just stretch out and catch some sun. Keep an eye peeled for frolicking dolphins. If you're visiting between late spring and early fall, you might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a beautiful sea turtle coming ashore to lay her eggs.
