Lake George is a good start place to start your vacation, but when you want to venture out, you should start by heading for Cat and Thomas Mountains Preserves, a smaller section of the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Cat and Thomas is an important natural area as it protects Finkle Brook. The brook flows through it before emptying into a pond that is a drinking water source for one of the local communities. Hiking and mountain biking is allowed, as is hunting during specific times of the year. Amy's Park is a forested area with ponds and marshes and was named after a local citizen. The park's surface area was purchased in 2012 using state and federal grants, allowing it to be protected and put to use for public recreation and education. It has numerous hiking trails that pass through the forested areas and wetland complexes, leading to scenic lookout points with panoramic views. You can use the park to launch your boat or canoe into Lake George. Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area is a nature preserve consisting of forest area surrounding Pharaoh Lake, one of the largest lakes in the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area has many additional smaller ponds that are still quite large and is home to Pharaoh Mountain, located at the northern tip of the lake. The park has dozens of hiking trails for you to choose from and primitive campsites that are suitable for smaller campers, should you want to go completely off the grid. In the winter, it's the perfect setting for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
