Hearthstone Point Campground is a family-friendly campground on Lake George and only minutes away from the similarly named-town Lake George. It is owned and managed by the New York State government, which owns several other campgrounds also located next to or near the lake. Hearthstone was opened to the public in 1927 and is a popular day destination due to its proximity to the lake, the surrounding forest, and some nearby mountains. Camping at Hearthstone Point Campground is one of the best ways to take advantage of this majestic area.

The lake itself is long and wide, and 200 feet deep; visitors can fish in the lake using motorboats or rowboats; canoes, kayaks, and sailboats are allowed on the water as well, so if fishing isn't your thing, you can enjoy the scenery as you cruise. There is a state highway that follows Lake George along its western shoreline; fire up the Lake George motorhome rental, and you can follow this road on a self-guided tour of the park at your leisure, seeing as much of the park as you want on your own time.

Getting Outdoors

Lake George is a good start place to start your vacation, but when you want to venture out, you should start by heading for Cat and Thomas Mountains Preserves, a smaller section of the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Cat and Thomas is an important natural area as it protects Finkle Brook. The brook flows through it before emptying into a pond that is a drinking water source for one of the local communities. Hiking and mountain biking is allowed, as is hunting during specific times of the year.

Amy's Park is a forested area with ponds and marshes and was named after a local citizen. The park's surface area was purchased in 2012 using state and federal grants, allowing it to be protected and put to use for public recreation and education. It has numerous hiking trails that pass through the forested areas and wetland complexes, leading to scenic lookout points with panoramic views. You can use the park to launch your boat or canoe into Lake George.

Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area is a nature preserve consisting of forest area surrounding Pharaoh Lake, one of the largest lakes in the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area has many additional smaller ponds that are still quite large and is home to Pharaoh Mountain, located at the northern tip of the lake. The park has dozens of hiking trails for you to choose from and primitive campsites that are suitable for smaller campers, should you want to go completely off the grid. In the winter, it's the perfect setting for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Camping at Hearthstone Point Campground

RV camping at Hearthstone Point Campground is just one of many options once you arrive, and its proximity to Lake George makes it a strong contender. The campground has restrooms with flush toilets and showers, a gazebo, a recycling center and dump station, and more. The swimming area on Lake George has a sandy beach where you can suntan before or after your swim; some of the amenities the park offers are ADA accessible.

Adirondack Camping Village is an RV campground nestled amongst the woods to provide you with unfettered peace and quiet. It's a seasonal campground and is open from around mid-May to early September each year. Some of the Adirondack campsites have full hookups, and some have shade from the trees; some have pull-through access. The campground is child- and pet-friendly and has many on-site activities you can enjoy; there is a heated swimming pool, a playground and a game room, and hayrides for the entire family.

Exploring the Area

Beyond Lake George, there are some interesting cities to check out while you're here. Glens Falls is situated on the Hudson River. The town has many landmarks such as a model railroad center, the Hyde Collection Art Museum and Historic Home, and others. There are many opportunities for shopping, including a fine arts center. The Glens Falls restaurant scene is extensive; many of the venues are inexpensive to moderately priced, and some have outdoor seating.

Pottersville is a tiny hamlet located within the boundaries of Adirondack Park and has a marble cave entrance (one of the largest in the eastern United States). At Scaroon Manor State Park, you can enjoy a leisurely approach to the outdoors; if you're ready to head indoors, the community has a studio-museum that custom builds toy train sets for clients. You're welcome to come in and look around. The town has a small but sufficient restaurant industry, and there are more options within a short distance of Pottersville.
