One of the historical attractions that you can see while you're here is the blacksmith shop owned and operated by Hoover's father, Jesse. Hoover's parents were Quakers, and their honesty and work ethic helped to shape the man who would become president. Another of the historic buildings is the Friends Meetinghouse, which was, in fact, a chapel of sorts but one that reflected their unusual style of devotion. As you explore the site on foot, you'll come across the House of the Maples area; today, this area contains a single maple tree, but it was once the site of Hoover's second childhood home. Continue on, and you will see the site's first schoolhouse, a one-room building that was constructed in 1853 by the townsfolk and was also used as a Quaker meetinghouse (the town's first). Education was important to Quaker society and to Hoover's parents, his mom becoming the town's first teacher. You'll also see in the historic site a statue of the Egyptian god Isis, which represents life's mysteries and today sits facing Hoover's birth cottage. It was a gift from Belgium who had been the recipient of much famine relief effort during World War I (the famine relief was arranged by Hoover). When you first arrive in the West Branch camper rental, you should begin by stopping at the Visitor Center before carrying onward. The center has a short film explaining Hoover's childhood and his motivation and efforts to establish the park. If you have kids in tow, they can pick up a Junior Rangers activity booklet to complete as they make their way through the site.
