The area was occupied by the Waccamaw Siouan people who have various stories regarding the formation of the lake. One believes that a meteor created the lake sent by the creator who was angry with the people for not honoring him. Another story tells of a beautiful princess that lived in the gardens here who asked for the garden to be changed into a lake when here tribe was overrun by a rival tribe.
