Renting an RV at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument will put you within easy reach of all the different activities found nearby. The monument is centered around the ancient Mogollon people who lived in this wild land thousands of years ago. The park's primary feature is the homes that were built into the rocky cliffs that are found throughout the park boundaries. Guided tours are available for some of these. Visitors can walk in the actual footsteps of the people who once lived here. The history and culture of this group are highlighted as well. There is also a Visitor's Center, on-site, that gives information on the ecosystems and animals found throughout the park. There are numerous trails that can be used for hiking and horseback riding at the monument. These can vary quite a bit in both their length and in how difficult they are. Some meander near streams at the bottoms of canyons, while others traverse the drier, scrub brush-covered hills found nearby. Visitors should be aware, temperatures can regularly exceed 100 degrees during many months of the year here, and there is very little shade to be found. Gila National Forest is located to the west of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. The forest is comprised of pine and scrub-covered, rolling hills. All sorts of recreational activities can be enjoyed here as well, including hiking and camping. There aren't many bodies of water in this wild land. If rain has fallen recently, though, you may be able to find some small streams to cool your feet in at the bottom of some of the scenic canyons and gorges located throughout the recreational area.
