Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is in southwest New Mexico, near the small town of Silver City. This is a very rural part of New Mexico. The nearest larger town is Las Cruces, which is around 150 miles to the southeast, while the nearest large city is El Paso, Texas, at almost 200 miles to the southwest.
This part of the country is dry and rugged, and most of the local towns are small and few and far between. Though there may be a lack of people, this is a great place to engage in outdoor recreational activities. Hiking, camping, picnic sites, and scenic drives are all available throughout this scenic area.

The monument is centered around the ancient Mogollon people who lived in this wild land thousands of years ago. Some meander near streams at the bottoms of canyons, while others traverse the drier, scrub brush-covered hills found nearby. Visitors should be aware, temperatures can regularly exceed 100 degrees during many months of the year here, and there is very little shade to be found.
Gila National Forest is located to the west of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. The forest is comprised of pine and scrub-covered, rolling hills. All sorts of recreational activities can be enjoyed here as well, including hiking and camping. There aren't many bodies of water in this wild land. If rain has fallen recently, though, you may be able to find some small streams to cool your feet in at the bottom of some of the scenic canyons and gorges located throughout the recreational area.
There are plenty of places to enjoy camping with an RV near Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. There is no campground at the actual monument, but there are several national forest campgrounds located nearby, as well as some RV parks that offer more amenities.
Ther National Forest campgrounds found near the park are all very rustic, with only vault toilets provided. They are also open throughout the year. There is no potable water offered at these sites. If water levels are high enough, you can acquire drinking water from the nearby river, but it will need to be boiled or sanitized using other means. You can always bring your own, of course.

There are several museums located in this town, as well. The Silver City Museum is found in a restored, historic home that was built in the 1880s. It highlights what life would have been like in the area during that time. There is also the Western New Mexico University Museum. You will find Big Ditch Park in Silver City as well. This is one place that is actually quite shaded, that will offer respite from the heat common to the local area. This walk meanders along the nearby river, with a picturesque bridge you can cross. There are also works of local artists displayed along its length.
