Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is in southwest New Mexico, near the small town of Silver City. This is a very rural part of New Mexico. The nearest larger town is Las Cruces, which is around 150 miles to the southeast, while the nearest large city is El Paso, Texas, at almost 200 miles to the southwest.

This part of the country is dry and rugged, and most of the local towns are small and few and far between. Though there may be a lack of people, this is a great place to engage in outdoor recreational activities. Hiking, camping, picnic sites, and scenic drives are all available throughout this scenic area.

Getting Outdoors

Visitors should be aware, temperatures can regularly exceed 100 degrees during many months of the year here, and there is very little shade to be found.

Gila National Forest is located to the west of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. The forest is comprised of pine and scrub-covered, rolling hills. All sorts of recreational activities can be enjoyed here as well, including hiking and camping. There aren't many bodies of water in this wild land. If rain has fallen recently, though, you may be able to find some small streams to cool your feet in at the bottom of some of the scenic canyons and gorges located throughout the recreational area.

If water levels are high enough, you can acquire drinking water from the nearby river, but it will need to be boiled or sanitized using other means. You can always bring your own, of course.
