Located eleven miles away from Gulf Shores in southern Alabama, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge occupies 7,157 acres of land. It is divided into five discrete parcels of land scattered across Baldwin and Mobile counties but is managed as a single entity. The units are Little Dauphin Island, Sand Bayou, Little Point Clear, Perdue, and Fort Morgan. Bon Secour is a French name meaning safe harbor. Designated in 1980, this Alabama coast gem features a wide range of habitats, including sand dunes, wetlands, wildflowers, beaches, and pine and oak forest. As the name suggests, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is home to hundreds of animal species, with more than 250 species of birds recorded here.
