Wilson Lake is hidden away in Alabama’s northwestern corner and has become a popular motorhome camping spot for those who book an RV in Lauderdale County. Conveniently located just a few miles east of Florence, and forty west of Athens, this large riverine lake can be reached via highways 72 or 101.

Otherwise known as Wilson Dam, this project, Wilson Lake, was the first of its kind to be built along the Tennessee River. Built by the Army Corps of Engineers during World War I, its original purpose was to supply power to two nearby nitrate plants that were producing explosives for the war. However, the war ended before the dam was completed, and instead, it was used as a hydroelectric power generator and for everyday outdoor recreation.

With exciting watersports, fantastic bass fishing, and wild rambling all on offer when you rent a camper near Wilson Lake, consider staying here for your next vacation!

Discover Wilson Lake

Getting Outdoors

Wilson Lake covers 15,500 acres and has become a paradise for watersports lovers camping with an RV nearby. An abundance of fully serviced marinas and public boat launch ramps line Wilson Lake’s 15-mile shoreline, so accessing the water should not be a problem. As part of the Tennessee River, there is a fair amount of boat traffic passing by, which means kayaking and canoeing, while both possible here, aren’t the most relaxing of activities. Instead, consider a day of jet skiing, water skiing, or wakeboarding, all of which are fantastic options for exploring these vast waters.

Don’t forget to take your tackle with your while RV camping at Wilson Lake, as there is plenty of fish up for grabs here! People come from all over the state to take advantage of the lake’s excellent smallmouth bass fishing. Largemouth bass, channel catfish and black bass are also very common in these waters. Boasting an ADA-accessible fishing pier, plenty of quiet spots along the shoreline, and an abundance of space in the open water to fish from, angling is a fun activity for everyone, no matter what your ability level!

Those who would rather admire the lake from a distance can do so on the ten miles of multi-use trails that run alongside the lake. Hiking, biking, horse riding, and even bird watching are popular activities among visitors to Wilson Lake. One of the most scenic trails on offer leads walkers along the shoreline of Wilson Lake, north along Shoal Creek, and eventually to the young forests of Shoal Creek Preserve. As well as enjoying the walk here, visitors should keep an eye out for the fantastic bird wildlife, which includes wild turkey and wood ducks.

Camping at Wilson Lake

You’re likely to need somewhere to park up for the night during your Wilson Lake camping trip. Lucky for you, there are plenty of campsites close by that provide prime access to the lake as well as to the city of Florence.

Consider spending the night at Colbert Alloys Park Campground if you’re keen to spend lots of time out on the water. As well as full hookup facilities at each of the twenty pitches, this campground boasts its own boat launch ramp, fishing pier, and recreational trail, all perfect for getting out and about in the great outdoors. Campers who enjoy staying connected while on holiday will be glad to learn of the campsite's free WiFi connection. What’s more, anyone traveling in a big rig will have no problem squeezing into a spot here thanks to the spacious sites. Just call ahead before your visit to make sure there’s a spot left for you.

Despite being more basic in its amenities, the official Wilson Dam campground is one of the most popular in the area, especially among anglers. This dry camping site offers no hookups for RV-users, but just a simple potable water tap along with showers and flushing toilets. RV’s up to 45 feet in length are accommodated for, and your pets are more than welcome to come along for the ride.

Exploring the Area

Should you fancy a day out while renting an RV near Wilson Lake, take the short drive to Florence, a vibrant city full of museums, galleries, and other family-friendly activities.

To preserve the area’s native Indian history, the Florence Indian Mound and Museum has been opened just outside of downtown Florence. The main attraction here is the 43-feet high mound, which claims to be the largest treasury of Indian artifacts in Alabama. This includes everything from hunting tools to clay pottery, jewelry to pipes. Visitors can climb the steps to reach the top of the mound, reflecting on their history while admiring the picturesque surroundings.

Young families visiting the area should consider popping into the city’s Children’s Museum, which is nestled onto the edge of Deibert Park. This institute has been meticulously designed to inspire creativity and curiosity at every corner. Perhaps your child has always dreamed of being a vet – their dream can come true in the Pet Vet corner. Or should they be interested in the prehistoric world, head over to the Dino Dig corner to search for unearthed fossils and precious stones!

As a city swathed in a rich history, there are plenty of historical landmarks dotted around town, including Rosenbaum House, Forks of Cypress, and the Sheffield Water Town. One not to be missed is the Old Railroad Bridge, which marks a significant transport route in the area, that was used as early as 1787. Restored to a safe standard in 1990, the bridge can now be explored by the general public, and is home to several informative display boards that tell you about its fascinating past.
