In the heart of Arizona surrounded by national forest land, Clarkdale continues to be one of the best towns you’ve probably never heard of. Clarksdale was founded in the early 20th century by William A. Clark, a copper mine owner who set his sights on creating a mining and smelting town. As a result, the town is named for Clark and there are a few landmarks and monuments paying homage to him in the community. Although the mining and smelting operations would eventually shut down in the 1950s, Clarkdale would avoid the usual fate of abandoned mining towns due to its heavy investment in modern infrastructure.
