However, there are a whole host of activities for the adventurous and the curious in this underrated city. Booking an RV in El Dorado County provides the perfect opportunity to take advantage of everything this township has to offer.

Coloma is located less than an hour northeast of Sacramento, so perfectly accessible if you choose to rent an RV from this bustling city. Located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada foothills, Coloma is most famously known as the first place James W Marshall found gold, triggering the California Gold Rush of 1849.

These rocky valleys, still splintered with flecks of gold, are home to a meandering river, offering perfect pitches to pull up an RV. Enjoy water sports, beautiful hikes and appreciate what the great outdoors has to offer in this part of The Golden State.

The Great Outdoors

You will be stuck for choice when it comes to the outdoor activities offered in Coloma. The pristine river surrounded by the beautiful rocky mountains makes for a fun but serene environment in which you may experience a unique adventure down on the river or up high in the mountains.

High intensity water-based activities are a pull for this area and a big reason why many choose to indulge in an RV rental from Coloma.

Beginning in The Desolation Wilderness, the South Fork American River runs over 86 miles down to the Sierra Nevada Foothills. This diverse stretch provides plenty of space for exciting water activities such as, white-water rafting and kayaking (available from April through to Labor Day). Even more, if you don’t fancy navigating your RV through the winding paths to get to the launch site, most tour operators will offer a bus transfer from the nearby cities of South Lake Tahoe or Reno, both of which have excellent options available to park your Coloma camper rental.

If you are looking for a peaceful spot to enjoy the tributaries of The South Fork American River, Henningsen Lotus County Park is just around the corner. Picture lakeside BBQ spots and plenty of boat ramps for public use. The modest park entry fee covers your use of the baseball and soccer fields and a large playground for the children. Note that the park closes at sundown! There is a short trail running from the Sierra Nevada House to Henningsen Lotus County Park, suitable for inexperienced walkers.

A little further out of town, away from the hustle and bustle of the lively river lies Ponderosa RV Resort. Located in Lotus this is ideal for those who enjoy volleyball, bocce ball and stream fishing. Nature and hiking trails, shower facilities and a playground for the kids are available. After parking your RV, head out to visit some area vineyards.

Despite the population of Coloma now nearing 500, during the Gold Rush this town had the same number of inhabitants as San Francisco has today. During this time, some miners quickly cottoned on to the fact that the idyllic weather conditions here, coupled with the fertile soil, meant that farming could be more lucrative than the mining industry. As a result, in the 1860’s there were over 3000 acres covered in grape vines, an industry that has carried on into the present day. Today, visitors can enjoy an array of experiences and barrel tastings and some venues even offer food pairings. A great experience for anyone who enjoys a glass of wine!

Coloma hosts a number of festivals throughout the year, one of which is particularly popular and brings those, who share a love of film and water sports, together for one week only. Each June, Coloma hosts the South Fork Film Festival which features the best of river paddle sports showcasing the work of both amateurs and professionals. Tickets are generally around the $5 mark, with children under 12 having free entry, perfect for couples, groups of friends and families.
