Dixon is a city in Solano County, California, which was incorporated in 1878. The first settlement near where Dixon now stands was Silveyville, established by Elijah S. Silvey in 1852. Silvey built and operated an inn and saloon along a well-traveled stagecoach route made famous by the California Gold Rush. By 1865, it had expanded to include a general store, post office, and a blacksmith. The arrival of the Vaca Valley Railroad upset the citizens of Silveyville when they learned that the line would not pass through their town. Instead, it crossed the property of Thomas Dickson who initiated a new settlement where downtown Dixon is located today. Settlers in Silveyville moved their homes and buildings by flat car to Dicksonville in order to be closer to the rail tracks. Dickson insisted that the community be officially named Dicksonville but the arrival of a package in 1872 was addressed to “Dixon” and the name stuck. Dickson tried for two years to have the change reversed but a county recorder in 1874 filed the new city maps under the name “Dixon”, stating that it was easier to remember.
