Duarte is a city in Los Angeles County, California, originally named Rancho Azusa de Duarte after Andres Duarte, a Mexican corporal. Several cities, such as Monrovia and Azusa, now reside on the lands owned by Duarte. In the mid-1800s, Duarte's lands were divided up and sold to settlers who came to farm and enjoy the climate. Duarte's first school was built around this time; its first two hospitals were constructed around the early 1900s. The community was fragmented for a long time but was finally incorporated in 1957, resulting in a city council and a school board. These institutions helped to focus the community, set priorities, and establish common goals. The community values its history, a fact reflected in its all-volunteer museum tracing Duarte's history from its inception to present day.
