On the northern banks of the Eel River in northern California, Fortuna is an enchanting town just a few minutes from the coast. Fortuna is commonly associated with the nearby cities of Eureka and Arcata, although there are not many large urban spreads in the sparsely populated section of coastline close to the Oregon border.

Nicknamed the “Friendly City,” Fortuna was once referred to as Slide before the town residents voted to change the name to Fortuna which means “chance” in Spanish. The riverfront community was first settled in the late 19th century when savvy business owners began to build mills along the river. After the city was incorporated in 1906, it had become an agricultural powerhouse, supplying much of the region with fresh produce and fruit.

When you book an RV in Fortuna, it is a surefire way to get your next vacation started off on the right foot. This magical little city is equal parts entertaining and beautiful, with a slew of cultural events taking place throughout the year. The Annual Fortuna Rodeo, the Daffodil Festival, and the Hops in Humboldt Festival account for just a small percentage of the local gatherings that take place in Fortuna, a refreshing, upcoming destination.

The Great Outdoors

Finding a fantastic nature park in northern California is so easy that you could practically throw a rock and hit some sort of nature park, preserve, recreation area, or campground. This stunning, sparsely populated area is known the world over for its pristine pine forests, rugged coastlines, and towering mountains. When you rent an RV in Fortuna, Humboldt Redwoods State Park is just down the road from town. To get there, you have to drive your Fortuna RV rental through the Avenue of the Giants, a scenic stretch of road that has massive groves of redwood trees. There is even a tree you can drive smaller cars and trucks through, much to the delight of children and first-time visitors. The park itself is named for the massive redwood trees that are some of the largest trees on the planet. Approximately half of the park’s 50,000 acres is an old-growth forest, with some trees thought to be well over 2,000 years old. Some of the trees can measure up to 400 feet in height and are wider than buses. You can hike and mountain bike through this unbelievable nature park, while swimming and fishing in the South Eel River is a great way to spend your time too. There are over 100 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, and ample space to camp out in your Fortuna luxury motorhome rental.

Richardson Grove State Park is much smaller, and farther south, but well worth a visit. There are peaceful swimming areas along the South Eel River, and thousands of acres of dense evergreen paradise to venture and trek through. Additionally, those with a Fortuna campervan rental can make use of the day-use area and campgrounds on site.

King Range National Conservation Area protects a gigantic swath of land on the Pacific Ocean, complete with a mountain range and miles of undeveloped coastline. Rolling hills of emerald undulate and retreat into the Pacific Ocean, capped with massive douglas fir trees and majestic redwood giants. The King Range runs parallel to the coast, creating unusual microclimates with tons of unique wildlife. You can stroll through fields of wildflowers or up and down a deserted coastline devoid of civilization in one of the region’s most peaceful and lesser-known parks.
