Lost Hills lies a short distance up Interstate 5 from Bakersfield and is one of the many agricultural towns at the southern end of California’s fertile Central Valley. The vast majority of Lost Hills’ residents work for Paramount Farms, which produces most of the pistachios and almonds that are consumed in the United States.

When you book an RV in Lost Hills, it will undoubtedly be a quiet affair punctuated with beautiful rural scenery and off-the-beaten-path attractions. Travelers who prefer fine dining, lots of shopping, and having many attractions to choose from can head to Bakersfield, which is less than 45 miles away.

The Great Outdoors

Despite the vast fields of vegetables, fruit trees, and nuts, there are still plenty of places to enjoy the outdoors when you have an RV rental in Lost Hills, CA. The Kern National Wildlife Refuge in McFarland is one of the closest places if you’re looking to spend some time in nature. It’s popular with bird watchers and has a few trails worth exploring. If you prefer to experience the wildlife from the comfort of your vehicle, it also has two roads traversing the park.

Another interesting place to see some wildlife, especially if you don’t spend much time in the mountains, is the Tule Elk Reserve just east of Bakersfield. Admittedly, it’s not the most naturalistic setting, with some tall fences herding the elk onto a small, flat plain. But, if you’ve never had the chance to see these majestic creatures up close, this is a fantastic place to visit.

If you’re up for a bit of a road trip, you’ll definitely want to make your way over to the Sierra Nevada range to the east of Lost Hills. It is the premier outdoor space in California and attracts hikers, kayakers, and mountain bikers from all over the country. One of the most popular attractions in the Sierra Nevada is Sequoia National Park, thanks to the massive trees that populate it. It does get fairly crowded during the summer months though, so you might check out the adjacent Kings Canyon National Park, which has some of the same beautiful landscapes but with fewer amenities and people.

RV Parks

Fortunately, you won’t need to look far to find a place to stay when you choose an RV rental in Lost Hills. The Lost Hills RV Park is conveniently located in the center of town, near the intersection of Interstate 5 and Route 46 and has full hookups, a dump station, a swimming pool, laundry facilities, and a dog park. If you want a comfortable RV park with lots of amenities, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to camp when you rent an RV in Lost Hills.

The next closest options are all on the northern edge of Bakersfield, which is still fairly close by. The Bakersfield River Run RV Park offers full hookups, a swimming pool, showers and laundry facilities, and it’s located near some great urban amenities like shopping and restaurants. If you would prefer to spend more time in the city when you get a motorhome rental in Lost Hills, this could be a good choice for you.

However, if you prefer mountains views to city skylines, you might enjoy Deer Creek RV Park in Porterville. It’s a bit farther from Lost Hills but is also much closer to Sequoia National Park and Forest. It has fairly basic amenities and good access to Route 65 for taking trips into the mountains.

Exploring the City

There aren’t too many attractions in the rolling plains outside Lost Hills; farming is its primary industry, not tourism. The major attractions will be down in Bakersfield, but there are a few things worth visiting that are close by. One of the more unique attractions to see when you choose a travel trailer rental in Lost Hills is Blackwell’s convenience store. It might appear to be just another small-town gas station selling souvenirs, but the real attraction is its history – it’s the last place that actor James Dean stopped before getting into a fatal car crash on Route 46. A large statue in his likeness sits outside the store, and the inside is full of memorabilia celebrating his life.

While it is a bit of a drive from Lost Hills, if you love history, you’ll want to make time for a visit to Colonel Allensworth State Historical Park. The park tells an amazing story of the hard work, tenacity, and ambition of a group of African American settlers who attempted to create a community all their own in the southern San Joaquin Valley. Unfortunately, the soil was not fertile enough to sustain profitable agriculture, so it was eventually abandoned. Their little-known story lives on with park visitors though as an important piece of California’s African American history.

The restaurant choices in the Lost Hills region consist almost solely of fast food chains and diners. So if you’re looking for something more upscale, you’ll need to make the drive into Bakersfield when you get a camper rental in Lost Hills.
