In the heart of Central California, with the rugged mountains of the Yosemite and Stanislaus National Parks to the east and the stunning San Francisco beaches to the west, is the farming town of Salida. Originally named Murphy’s Ferry, Salida adopted the new name of Spanish roots in 1875, five years after the railroad arrived in 1870.

Salida is an excellent place to rent an RV and discover the wonders of Stanislaus County. This census-designated place is just a short drive north of the metropolitan cities of Modesto, Stockton, and Sacramento via Highway 99. It’s also in close proximity to Interstate 5 and Interstate 580.

The Great Outdoors

The Yosemite National Park is a must see when you rent an RV in Salida. This incredible natural area is just over an hour's drive away, via highways 120 or 140, and offers countless recreational activities to please visitors of all ages and abilities. Families might enjoy the 12 miles of mostly flat cycle routes provided in the Yosemite Valley area of the park, while adventurous hikers can park their Salida RV rental in Yosemite Village and escape into the 1,200 square miles of wilderness. The Yosemite Valley also offers hiking trails for all abilities, from the moderate Mirror Lake Trail to the tough climb by cable to the Half Dome viewpoint. Even if you’re not so keen to get active, you can still marvel at the panoramic views provided on the 39-mile Tioga Road scenic byway.

During the winter months of mid-December to March, visitors can still enjoy the great outdoors in Yosemite National Park. The Crane Flat Recreational Area is set up with marked trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing as well as a sledding and tubing area for the kids to play in. From mid-November to mid-March, Yosemite Valley hosts an outdoor ice-skating rink. Plus, the Yosemite Ski & Snowboard Area is home to the oldest downhill skiing area in California. There are plenty of outdoor activities for all seasons when you book one of the RV rentals in Stanislaus County.

Stanislaus National Forest is just north of the Yosemite National Park and hosts over 800 miles of rivers and waterways with an area of nearly 900,000 acres. This makes it one of the best spots in California to get involved in water sports. There is a range of activities available from canoeing excursions on tranquil lakes to challenging kayaking routes, or rafting on the Tuolumne River. The national forest is also home to two wilderness areas which offer adventurous hikers a number of primitive walking trails through remote backcountry. The Stanislaus National Forest also provides marked multi-use trails for mountain biking, ATVs, and horseback riding.

A little closer to home is the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge which makes a pleasant day trip from Salida. The refuge hosts one of the largest riparian forest restoration projects in the whole of California. It also provides a safe haven for riparian brush rabbits, the state's most endangered mammal, and Aleutian cackling geese, which are no longer listed as an endangered species. Visitors can discover the resident wildlife by walking along the four-mile Pelican Nature Trail or by visiting the viewing area on Beckwith Road.

RV Parks

When you need to find a home for your luxury RV rental in Salida take a look at French Camp RV Park on Highway 99. This campground provides guests with a fitness center, swimming pool, and an on-site convenience store, plus a clubhouse, children’s playground, and designated dog parks. All sites are fitted with full hookups and guests have access to restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities.

Closer to Modesto is Two Rivers RV Park which sits at the meeting point of the San Joaquin and Stanislaus Rivers. The park offers direct access to both rivers via a private boat launch ramp. It’s also located in proximity to Highway 132 which connects to Modesto city center and the Yosemite National Park.

If you’re looking for something a little more remote then check out the rustic, electric-free campsites available in the Yosemite National Park. Most campgrounds are open from mid-May to October/November, including Yosemite Creek and Tuolumne Meadows Campground on Tioga Road, plus the Upper, Lower, and North Pines Campgrounds in Yosemite Village. These campgrounds provide scenic RV campsites with access to drinking water and flush toilets.

Explore the City

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the highlights in and around town while you rent a motorhome in Salida. Salida hosts a selection of restaurants and cafés, including chain brands, as well as toy shops and a unique warehouse of antiques. Plus, the region surrounding Salida is dotted with farms and orchards which come into bloom in early spring.

Due to its proximity to Modesto, visitors can enjoy the annual activities which take place in the neighboring city. Each June the city hosts Graffiti Summer in proud memory of locally born George Lucas, co-writer and director of the movie American Graffiti. After the hot summer has passed, the International Architecture Festival takes place in September, followed by the International Heritage Festival in October.
