The Salton Sea is situated in the San Andreas Fault of Coachella and Imperial valleys in the Colorado Desert of California. The sea lies less than 25 miles away from the city of Mecca and around 30 away from the town of Thermal in Riverside County, California. The Salton Sea is a shrinking water mass, smelly and salty, but still manages to attract thousands of visitors each year, including local Riverside campers.

This inland sea, which is saltier than the Pacific Ocean came into existence as a result of engineering failure and historic flooding. The Salton Sea is an enormous lake, currently the largest in the state of California and was formed when water filled up the Salton Sink, a well that was below sea level. Developers put up retirement homes and tourists attractions in expectation of a boom in the area.

Visitors who come to the sea each year are fascinated with its breathtaking beauty. It is a photographer’s paradise with miles upon miles of the lake’s shores on a backdrop of mountainous skyline. Whether you wish to Kayak, or simply take breathtaking photos at the lakeside, search for an RV in Riverside County, to be able to experience the best that the Salton Sea area has to offer.

Getting Outdoors

Many folks coming to this vast sea arrive out of fascination, curiosity, and to behold its striking beauty. The salty waters of the lake prevent many fish types from surviving in its waters. However, fish like hardy Tilapia thrive very well in the sea. They are so crowded at the Salton Sea that many locals keep their families well-fed with a catch from here. Pack your fishing gear, tackle and bait in your RV rental and try your hand at landing one of these fish. Anglers have great success fishing on the water and even from the shoreline. There are rules and regulations you need to follow, though. They may be found by doing an online search of California fishing regulations.

If kayaking is what you enjoy and your idea of fun, the Salton Sea will provide more than you can expect. Motorized boats are not able to access the Salton Sea because of low water levels, making it a haven for kayakers. Carry your binoculars as well as your camera and enjoy unique scenery as you paddle quietly on this large water mass in Southern California. Park your camper nearby should you need to charge any devices during your adventure.

Bird watching is a favorite activity in the winter for area residents as well as visitors camping at the Salton Sea. The sea is a stopping point for over 400 species of birds migrating along the Pacific Flyway in October to march. Your camera will come in handy here with over 100 miles of shoreline and numerous easily accessible marshes strewn with migrating birds. You will not exhaust the opportunities available for bird watching at the Salton Sea.

Camping at Salton Sea

As you plan to do some RV camping at the Salton Sea, consider either primitive wilderness or modern creature comforts at the campgrounds for your pleasure. The Salton Sea has three campgrounds, which can accommodate vehicles up to 45 feet. Amenities include water, electricity, showers, bathrooms, and dump stations.

Headquarters, New Camp and Mecca campgrounds all feature full hookup sites as well as electric hookups. Mecca beach has the highest number of full hookup sites. Generators are allowed at the sites as well as your dog. However, keep your dog leashed for their safety, as well as others. The facilities are never overcrowded as they have been created to accommodate a high number of visitors.

Should you wish to camp in a rental motorhome at the Salton Sea, you will not have a problem reserving a full hookup site any time of the year. Consider making reservations up to six months in advance by visiting the California State website. However, due to the high temperatures rise in the Salton Sea area, it is best to visit between October and May.

Exploring the Area

Before you leave the Salton Sea, consider touring the Southern California region, particularly the Colorado Desert. As you explore Southern California visit the city of Indio, which is 24 miles away from the Salton Sea.

While in the city grab a bite in one of the eateries that serve some of the best Southern California cuisines. Are you a history buff? Consider a visit to the Coachella Valley History Museum before you leave the area and head to your next attraction on your outdoor adventure.
