The small town of Wallace can be found about halfway between Stockton and California’s capital, Sacramento, on the shores of the Comanche Reservoir. If you’re looking to get away from it all but still want to have access to the attractions and amenities of the city, Wallace might be your next vacation destination.

When you book an RV in Wallace you’re setting yourself for an adventure not taken by many other tourists. Surrounding Calaveras County is one of California’s least populous but its chock-full of interesting history dating back to the days of the Klondike Gold Rush in the mid-19th century. The county is famous for being the setting for Mark Twain’s story “The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” and due to the ensuing notoriety, the town of Angel Fair puts on a “jumping frog fair” every year to celebrate with a frog-jumping contest.

The Great Outdoors

The most obvious place for outdoor recreation is the Comanche Reservoir just outside of town. Comanche South Shore Recreation Area is a public park that juts out from the lake’s southeastern corner and is filled with great hiking trails, an amphitheater for outdoor concerts, and of course, a splendid shoreline for fishing (provided you have a California fishing license). A nearby resort also rents kayaks if you’re looking to do some paddling around the lake.

If you want to see some giant trees without braving the crowds at Sequoia National Park head to Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The Giant Sequoia trees are a sight to behold and you can even walk through the trunk of Pioneer Cabin Tree, which was carved out before state conservationists outlawed modifications to the trees.

The Sierra Nevada range and the Stanislaus National Forest are also close by and see far fewer tourists than nearby Yosemite National Park. If you prefer your trails free of crowds but with magnificent views, this is definitely the place to go.

When you rent an RV in Wallace, you’ll also need to be mindful of your fuel stops and where dump stations are located if one is not available at your park. Most of the larger truck stops are clustered around Interstate 5 and Route 99, which aren’t exactly close by. Plan accordingly and fill up whenever you’re driving on major highways.

Wallace’s isolated location and small population mean that there’s not too much to do in the town itself. Most visitors who choose to get a travel trailer rental in Wallace come for the peace and quiet along with the excellent outdoor recreation just a short drive away. For city activities, you’ll probably want to head to Angel Fair, which has some interesting small shops along its main street in addition to a few good restaurants serving varied cuisine.
