Getting Outdoors
On the weekend, the 800 acres of Cherry Creek Reservoir will be awash with keen boaters searching for a piece of the action. If you’ve remembered to bring your boat with you on your Cherry Creek Reservoir camping trip, head to one of the two boat launch ramp facilities located on both the east and west shoreline. Alternatively, head to Pelican Bay, home to a fully serviced marina, where you’ll find rental outlets and an office for grabbing your boating license. Motorized boating is permitted on the open waters, though boaters should adhere to the ‘no-wake’ zones and watch out for other boats on the lake. Unfortunately, swimming from your own boat is not allowed here, so head to one of the two designated swimming beaches if you fancy a dip in the refreshing waters.
Camping at Cherry Creek Reservoir
Cherry Creek State Park is home to a campground that is open year-round and is the perfect place to set up camp with your RV rental. Along with full hookup campsites and well-maintained restrooms, 21st-century campers will love staying connected on the free WiFi network. Added extras include a coin-operated laundry room, seasonal marina, and easy access to the nearby swimming beach. In summer, you’ll want to reserve a spot in advance as the campground fills up fast. From November through to March, camping spots are limited to just the Abilene Loop, and there is no dump station available at this time either. Do keep in mind that other community amenities such as washrooms and laundry facilities may also close during the slow season.
Exploring the Area
Cherry Creek Reservoir’s proximity to Denver means there is plenty to keep you occupied in the nearby area. The Denver Botanic Garden features one of North America’s largest collection of cold climate plants from around the world and is a must-see if you’re popping into the city. Across 23-acres, there are 43 different gardens all boasting their own theme, including the highly revered Japanese gardens. A series of winding paths make exploring the gardens a breeze – just make sure you allow enough time to explore it all!

We had a lovely experience. Some minor hiccups at the start of the trip were handled by our hosts with care, and the van came with everything we needed as people flying in from out of town to have a fantastic time camping in Rocky Mountain National Park! Our driver reported the van being a lot easier to drive than he expected to, which was great for when we also took some time seeing the sights of Denver as well and it was pulling "Rental car" duty. With four adults in close relationships, it was perfect sleep-wise as well, but know the quarters are quite tight if you aren't as tight knit with who you're sharing the van with!
