The main draw bringing thousands to Dillon Lake and the surrounding area every year is the skiing opportunities. Skiing in Summit County is a world-famous activity, bringing people in there droves to places like Dillon Lake. ‘Arapahoe Basin,’ a medium-sized ski resort, is located only ten miles from Dillon Lake, and 'Breckenridge,' the largest ski resort in all of Colorado, is only seven miles away. When the snow is thick, and winter has truly come to Colorado, you can still camp in an RV near Dillon and ski down the slopes until your heart’s content.

Camping at Dillon Lake

Those wishing to camp at Dillon Lake have numerous choices, from lakeside campsites to full RV parks located throughout Summit County. ‘Heaton Bay Campground’ can be found on the western shore of Dillon Lake and is a perfect site for campers who want to be close to the lake’s edge. Partial hookups are provided here, including 20, 30 amp electric, sewer, and water hookup. Facilities include vault toilets, trash cans, fire rings, and picnic tables. Pets are more than welcome at Heaton Bay Campground but must be kept on a leash at all times.

Exploring the Area

Dillion Lake is only a short drive east from the city of Denver, capital and metropolitan hub of Colorado. The city has numerous opportunities for fantastic sight-seeing and fun-filled day trips. Campers, especially ones with young children, will be thrilled with a visit to the ‘Denver Zoo.’ The zoo is home to three and a half thousand animals, representing over five-hundred unique species. Take a look at ‘Bear Mountain,’ a historical exhibit, as it was one of the first natural-style zoo-exhibits in North America. There is also ‘Predator Ridge,’ an environment designed to look like the African savanna, containing lions, spotted hyenas, and wild dogs.

My husband, pup and I had such a great experience renting from Alex & his wife. The van was fully stocked and comfortable for a four-night roadtrip around the Utah desert in November. The features are top-notch and easy to use because one panel controls everything. We had a warm place to cook, hang and sleep after days spent exploring. Our hosts were gracious, accommodating and communicated well throughout. It was clear they wanted us to enjoy our time with the van they’ve taken such good care of, and we did.
