Categorized as a glacial lake, Coventry Lake in Connecticut was formed around 13,000 years ago when the mile-high glacier scraped and gouged its way north at the end of the Ice Age. Several generations of prehistoric and semi-modern Native Americans lived and hunted in the woods around Coventry Lake. The lake is sometimes referred to as Wangumbaug Lake, which means “crooked pond” in Algonquin Native American language. One of the first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1700s, driving out the local Native American tribes.
